EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer completes its three-game homestand on Thursday, Sept. 1, as the Spartans host the Dartmouth Big Green in a 5 p.m. contest at DeMartin Stadium.
The game will serve as the first half of a Spartan soccer doubleheader, with the men's team set to take on Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and stay for both contests, as Michigan State welcomes students back to campus with lawn games, food trucks, as well as meet and greet opportunities with both teams following their respective games.
HEAD COACH JEFF HOSLER SAID…
"Dartmouth is a really organized group," Hosler said. "They are comfortable both in and out of possession, and they are a very capable counter-attacking team. They work hard in their press and can make it difficult to build through. Their players understand their roles within the system and move the ball well. It is going to take a total team effort, but we are also going to have to be better in continuing and building on our good moments. Off the field, we are extremely excited to have all of the students back in session, and I hope we can get a really good crowd out there on Thursday. With the men's doubleheader, this could be one of the first chances for a lot of people to see us play live this year, with what we think is a really good brand of soccer."
KICKIN' IT
MSU returns to work on Old College Field for its third-consecutive home contest, having dispatched with both Central Michigan and Binghamton a week ago on the banks of the Red Cedar. The Spartans dominated the Chippewas in a 7-0 affair in which six players booked goals, highlighted by a pair of scores from freshman midfielder Courtney Koehler. The Green & White returned to work on Senior Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the Bearcats. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Big Ten Conference announced that Koehler won the league's Freshman of the Week accolade, while senior Lauren Kozal was named Goalkeeper of the Week.
BATTLING THE BIG GREEN
Head Coach Ron Rainey guides Dartmouth into its third game of the season boasting a 2-0 overall record aided by a pair of 2-0 victories over regional rivals Fordham and Sacred Heart. The Big Green return to action following a 7-7-1 slate a year ago that included a 2-5 ledger in Ivy League contests. Dartmouth welcomes back a pair of All-Ivy League standouts in Allie Winstanley and Hannah Curtin, who finished first and second, respectively, in scoring for the Big Green one year ago. Winstanley led the team in both goals (seven) and assists (six).
STORY OF THE SERIES: DARTMOUTH
Michigan State looks to even the all-time series with Dartmouth in the second-ever meeting of the two programs on Thursday evening. Dartmouth took home a 2-0 result over the Spartans on Sept. 16, 1991. MSU hosted the only prior contest featuring the two programs on Old College Field at DeMartin Stadium.
