Saldate gets team-leading seventh pin, while Lujan and Foley score major decisions
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite ranked competition in the upper weight classes, the Michigan State wrestling team was able to win its last three bouts to wrap up a 29-6 victory over Maryland on Friday night in the Xfinity Center Pavilion.
Using top-25 wins from redshirt junior Layne Malczewski at 184 and redshirt senior Cameron Caffey at 197, MSU moved to 9-2 in dual meets and 4-2 in the Big Ten, while the Terrapins shifted to 5-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
The Spartans started hot with back-to-back major decisions, as sophomore Tristan Lujan used four takedowns to get a 16-3 victory over Tommy Capul at 125 pounds and Rayvon Foley built up over five minutes of riding time in a 9-0 win over 133-pound King Sandoval. Graduate student Matt Santos continued the momentum when he scored a sudden-victory takedown in a 4-2 decision against Danny Betoni in the 141 match.
At 149, Michael North recorded a 11-5 decision over redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania to put the Terps on the board, but the 157-pound bout ended almost as quickly as it started when sophomore Chase Saldate pinned Lucas Cordio in 2:06. Fellow sophomore Caleb Fish picked up the fifth Spartan victory when he earned a 7-1 decision against 165-pound Gaven Bell, while Maryland got a second bout win after Dom Solis defeated redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez in a 6-1 decision.
Building up riding time late ended up making the difference for 184-pound redshirt junior Layne Malczewski in his showdown with No. 13 Kyle Cochran, as Cochran's late reversal made it a narrow 3-2 decision for Malczewski. In the other highlight bout of the night, redshirt senior Cameron Caffey scored five third-period points to come back and defeat No. 26 Jaron Smith in a 5-3 decision. MSU ended the night with another victory, as redshirt senior Brad Wilton needed extra time to defeat Maryland heavyweight Zach Schrader in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision and close out the 29-6 MSU win.
The Spartans now lead the all-time series with Maryland at 7-1, while Caffey extended his winning streak to eight, a span that includes four ranked victories. For Malczewski, this is the third-straight week of action with a top-25 win and improves his record against Cochran to 2-0. The win also secures MSU a .500-or-better conference record for the first time since the 2004-05 season (4-3-1 that year).
Michigan State finishes up its slate of Big Ten duals next week, hosting Northwestern in Jenison Field House on Friday, Feb. 11, before traveling to rival Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 13.

"I tell our guys to wrestle for seven minutes in all ten matches and that's what they did tonight."
"184 is what you get when you have two of the top guys in the country wrestling each other. Layne is the ultimate competitor. Early on in the year and even through the first couple years of his career, he'd go for big moves all the time. He's learned how to manage matches, so he's going to be hard to deal with. Tonight, all he did was wrestle through every situation and that's why he got the win."
"Cam Caffey leads our program in so many different ways and he just never stops competing. People mistake him for being tired based on how his body language is. He's not tired, he's actually thinking out there and he can score a lot of different areas, including from on top tonight."
"Santos is a veteran of the program and he's one of my favorite guys as far as how hard he works and how he competes in any situation. He hasn't had the success that I know he wants or that I expected out of him, but every time Matt steps on the mat he's going to compete."
Bout-By-Bout
125: Tristan Lujan (MSU) major dec. Tommy Capul (UMD), 16-3
Lujan in an early shot that nearly got him points, but Capul was able to hold off for a stalemate before Lujan got a takedown in the final minute of the first period. Starting down in the second, Lujan was mat returned but quickly worked himself into a reversal, while Capul was eventually able to get free but was quickly taken down again by Lujan and the Spartan rode him the rest of the frame. Going neutral in the third, Lujan got Capul in a single leg and converted for a takedown before giving Capul another escape and then had his fourth takedown, getting a stall point and a four-point near-fall in the closing moments of the bout for a 16-3 major decision with riding time secured.
133: No. 11 Rayvon Foley (MSU) major dec. King Sandoval (UMD), 9-0
An early scramble and some hand-fighting led to Sandoval getting a headlock on Foley for a second, but Foley instantly turned it into a takedown and built up over two minutes of riding time in the first. On top, Foley continued to ride Sandoval and got a penalty point when Sandoval was called for stalling along with two back points. Starting in neutral for the third, Foley added on another takedown 30 seconds into the period, as another stall point and over five minutes of riding time gave Foley a 9-0 major decision.
141: Matt Santos (MSU) dec. Danny Bertoni (UMD), 4-2 (SV-1)
Hand-fighting helped Bertoni get in two attempts, but Santos was able to defend both until a stalemate was called with a minute left in the opening period. Going down to start the second, Santos was able to work a reversal about a minute into the second, but eventually had to let Bertoni escape on a failed mat return. Santos went on top to begin the third, but Bertoni got the escape to even the score and several shots from both sides were unsuccessful before the third ended. In the sudden victory period, Santos got the takedown in 24 seconds to grab a 4-2 decision.
149: Michael North (UMD) dec. Peyton Omania (MSU), 11-5
While North got Omania in an early headlock, Omania was able to get out of it after a while but was then taken down by North for two points. Omania then escaped, but North got another takedown before the period ended. With North on top in the second, Omania worked out an escape after a minute, but then got dinged for a stall point and North added another takedown to go up 7-2 entering the third. With Omania on top, he kept North down for nearly 50 seconds, but North escaped and quickly scored a fourth takedown. Omania then escaped and picked North up for a takedown late in the period. North's riding time ended up giving him a 11-5 decision.
157: No. 17 Chase Saldate (MSU) fall over Lucas Cordio (UMD), 2:06
An early Cordio takedown was followed by Saldate quickly getting the reversal to put himself on top, and the Spartan eventually worked Cordio onto his back for a 2:06 fall.
165: Caleb Fish (MSU) dec. Gaven Bell (UMD), 7-1
A scramble allowed Bell to attack, but Fish avoided it and landed his own takedown within the opening minute of the match before Bell escaped. A scramble ensued, but a stalemate was called before the end of the first. Fish went up to start the second and made attempts at getting back points, as his first attempt failed but Fish got a four-point near-fall on his second attempt. Fish was on top again to begin the third, with a stalemate at the 6:00 mark allowing Fish to ride Bell for the rest of the match and secure 4:34 of riding time in a 7-1 decision.
174: Dom Solis (UMD) dec. Nathan Jimenez (MSU), 6-1
Several shots from Solis were defended by Jimenez, and Jimenez got his own shot in that was not called a takedown, which Solis turned into his own takedown. An MSU challenge on Jimenez's possible takedown was not successful, giving Solis a 2-0 lead and top position on the restart. Jimenez rolled loose to escape on a Solis mat-return attempt, but Solis got another takedown as the buzzer sounded on the first frame. Solis was on top to start the second period, mat returning Jimenez multiple times while riding the Spartan for the entire middle frame. Jimenez went on top for the third period, but Solis escaped and had the riding time advantage to score the 6-1 decision.
184: No. 23 Layne Malczewski (MSU) dec. No. 13 Kyle Cochran (UMD), 3-2
Cochran got Malczewski by the leg early, but Malczewski was able to get his leg out of the cradle and get back to hand-fighting for the rest of the first period. The second period put Cochran on top, but a quick trip out of bounds set up Malczewski to get an escape on the restart, and a lengthy scramble with no control from either side resulted in a stalemate call. Malczewski started on top in the third and another scramble eventually got another restart. After going off the mat, Malczewski was able to ride Cochran to get over a minute of riding time, as a Cochran reversal late and a quick Malczewski escape made the riding time the edge that Malczewski needed for a 3-2 decision.
197: No. 8 Cameron Caffey (MSU) dec. No. 26 Jaron Smith (UMD), 5-3
Smith converted on a double-leg takedown one minute into the first period and rode Caffey for 1:33 before Caffey was able to get free, but a UMD challenge overturned the escape and Smith rode Caffey for the rest of the period. Caffey went on top in the second, riding Smith for 1:58 before Smith shook out for an escape. Caffey got the quick reversal in the third after going down and picked up two near-fall point near the edge of the circle after a scramble, but UMD challenged the call. The call stood and Caffey kept Smith down for the remainder of the bout, getting a 5-3 decision with riding time.
285: Brad Wilton (MSU) dec. Zach Schrader (UMD), 3-1 (SV-1)
Wilton and Schrader hand-fought early before going out of bounds, and the hand-fighting continued following the restart without any substantial shots for the rest of the first. Wilton escaped early in the second after going down, and more hand-fighting rounded out the second period. With Schrader down to begin the third, Wilton rode him for 0:27 before the Terp heavyweight escaped and a late scramble ended without any point in the final moments of the third. Going to the sudden-victory period, an early Wilton attack forced the two wrestlers out of bounds and the restart allowed Schrader to get a shot on Wilton's leg, but a stalemate ended the attempt. A stall warning on Wilton and one last Schrader shot were countered by Wilton, who was able to get behind Schrader for the winning takedown and a 3-1 decision.
