NEWARK, N.J. – Michigan State wrestling redshirt senior and 16th-ranked Layne Malczewski published a pair of ranked victories at 184 pounds, and the Green & White defeated two challengers in dual competition on Sunday afternoon at the 2022 Garden State Grapple from Prudential Center.
Following Sunday's action, the Spartans improved to 5-0 overall through their first five duals of the year for the second straight year, matching the team's start from the 2021-22 campaign that culminated in a 10-4 regular season with a 4-4 Big Ten effort. Princeton, which was receiving votes in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, dropped to 0-3 overall on Sunday, while Binghamton dropped to 1-5 at the end of Garden State Grapple action.
Michigan State roared out of the gates early on with a decision at 125 pounds against the Bearcats, with junior Tristan Lujan notching a hard-fought 2-1 win over Micah Roes. Eighth-ranked graduate Rayvon Foley stood out in a 13-1 major decision over Anthony Sobotker that drove MSU's lead to 7-0. Redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan recorded a 5-0 decision against Nate Lucier at 141 just before redshirt junior 149-pounder Peyton Omania dominated in a two-minute, 38-second pin against Michael Zarif that drove the Green & White to a 16-0 advantage.
The bout at 157 featured a solid 8-0 major decision by 15th-ranked junior Chase Saldate over Conner Decker. Junior and 32nd-ranked Caleb Fish gritted out a 5-4 decision against Dimitri Gamkelidze to balloon MSU's lead to 23-0. Binghamton recorded its first win of the dual at 174 pounds, with Sam DePrez finishing a 6-3 decision over Lucas Daly just before Malczewski responded with a tough 1-0 decision against 25th-ranked Jacob Nolan to return the Spartans to the win column. With a 26-3 lead in hand, Spartan graduate and 17th-ranked Cameron Caffey took down seventh-ranked Lou DePrez by riding time following the second tiebreaker period. Binghamton's Cory Day won an 8-4 match against Ryan Vasbinder to conclude the dual, giving MSU a 29-6 win through Sunday's opening act.
After a brief intermission, the Spartans took the mat against Princeton and got out to a 6-0 lead following a forfeit at 125 pounds. Foley continued his winning ways at 133 against Sean Pierson, downing his Tiger opponent by an 11-6 score. The dual continued with a pair of Spartan decisions at 141 and 149, with Hamdan defeating Danny Coles in an 11-4 match before Omania beat Rocco Camillaci in a 3-2 result, giving the Spartans a 15-0 advantage heading into the match at 157.
Princeton came back with a vengeance, winning four of the next five bouts to bring the team score within three heading into the heavyweight competition. Top-ranked 157-pounder Quincy Monday sparked the Tiger comeback, wrestling Saldate and booking an 5-0 decision to log Princeton's first four points of the afternoon. Blaine Bergey toppled Fish in sudden victory by a 6-4 decision, and Kole Mulhauser completed a 15-0 technical fall that cut MSU's lead to four. Malczewski stymied the Tiger momentum with an 8-4 decision over No. 32 Nate Dugan, but Princeton came back with an 11-3 major decision at 197, with No. 19 Luke Stout defeating Caffey. With the team victory on the line, Vasbinder stepped onto the mat and gutted out a thrilling 8-6 win in sudden victory that finalized Michigan State's 21-15 win.
On an individual basis, Malczewski remains unblemished in the 2022-23 campaign with a 9-0 overall record coupled with a 5-0 mark in dual competition. Malczewski joined Lujan, Foley, Hamdan and Omania with undefeated efforts in the Garden State, as Hamdan improved upon his team-best win tally with a 12-3 mark on the year. Omania rose to 8-1 overall, while Lujan matched Malczewski at 9-0.

Head Coach Roger Chandler
On what the team showed in a pair of hard-fought duals…
"The biggest thing I saw today was a team that is committed to being gritty. You saw that by how tough our guys were willing to be on top. We weren't giving free, easy points and that's championship-level wrestling. We knew coming into today that both of these teams were going to be physical. I thought that, by and large against Binghamton, we really set the tone and took it to them in every match. Obviously, Princeton was a whole different story. We knew what they brought to the table, and we have to be a little bit smarter if we are going to continue to extend our gap against teams like that."
On Layne Malczewski's performance…
"I just think he's keeping a sense of calm when he competes. He is never out of any match, and I think that's a product of competitive maturity. He has quite a few years of experience. He gave up a takedown, and after that happened he mentally reset himself and stayed in the match. That's exactly the kind of wrestler he is. He's a leader on our team."
Redshirt senior 184-pounder Layne Malczewski
On the keys to his success and the team's victories on Sunday…
"Obviously, you always have to go out there and wrestle for seven full minutes. That's always the biggest thing out there. Our coaches have really pointed out that we did a great job on top. I like to think that I did a pretty good job in that department, even though I got reversed once today. Being gritty on top and staying where we want to be on our feet were key to our team's success today."
