Three in Double Figures as Michigan State Beats Oakland, 67-54

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore guard Jaden Akins scored a career-high 15 points to lead three players in double figures as Michigan State used a big second half to pull away from Oakland University in a 65-49 win at the Breslin Center Wednesday night.
Graduate forward Joey Hauser led the Spartans with 16 points, while adding four rebounds and four assists and senior guard Tyson Walker added 13 points, three assists and three rebounds and junior guard A.J. Hoggard had eight points, eight assists and four rebounds.

- The Spartans led by just five points, 29-24, at the break but used a 23-5 run over the opening 4:26 of the second half to push the lead to 23 points, 52-29, on a 3-pointer from Akins at the 15:34 mark.
- A jumper from freshman forward Jaxon Kohler gave MSU a 54-32 lead with 13:21 to play and a 3-pointer from Hauser with 8:18 left gave the Spartans a 57-39 lead.
- The Golden Grizzlies pulled to within 13 points twice, the latter on a fast break layup from former Spartan Rocket Watts, making it 59-46 with 5:33 left.
- Back-to-back baskets from Walker and Hoggard and two free throws from junior center Mady Sissoko pushed the lead back to 19 points, 65-46, with 3:30 remaining.
- Michigan State had trailed for most of the first half, but opened the second half with a 12-4 r2 and took a 41-26 lead on a 3-pointer from Walker just over two minutes into the second half, forcing Oakland to call a timeout.
- That was part of the larger 23-5 run to open the second half as the Spartans took their biggest lead on the trey from Akins.
- The Spartans had taken an early 13-6 lead in the first half, but Oakland used a 12-0 run and took an 18-13 lead on a 3-pointer from Blake Lampman at the 11:52 mark.
- A hook shot from Chris Conway gave the Golden Grizzlies a 24-21 lead 6:13 left, but the Spartans outscored Oakland 8-0 over the final 5:03 and took a 29-24 lead on a three from Hauser with 1:27 left.
- Michigan State shot 49.0 percent from the floor (25-of-51), including 54.2 percent in the second half (13-of-24).
- After 11 turnovers in the first half, MSU committed just five in the second half.
