WASHINGTON – Michigan State wrestling continued its tear through the non-conference portion of the dual slate, dominating the American University Eagles in a 33-0 shutout on Friday evening inside Bender Arena.
The Spartans improve to 3-0 through their first three contests for the second-straight year, most recently opening a season undefeated through a trio of duals in the 2021-22 campaign against Lock Haven, Bucknell and Gardner-Webb. In their first three wins of the 2022-23 slate, MSU has already notched a pair of shutout victories, highlighted by the highest scoring output by any Spartan wrestling team in program history on Friday, Nov. 11, with a 52-0 rout of Davidson. Michigan State most recently notched a pair of shutout results in a single season during the 2019-20 slate, blanking Duke and Maryland.
Friday evening's action begin in the higher weight classes, with No. 16 Cameron Caffey booking an impressive 21-5 tech fall in the 197-pound bout against Liam Volk-Klos, putting MSU ahead by a 5-0 score early on. The dual moved into the heavyweight class moments later, with former NCAA Division II National Champion Ryan Vasbinder booking his fifth overall victory of the 2022 campaign and second dual win with a 3-2 decision over Will Jarrell that put the Spartans up 8-0
Returning to the bottom of the lineup card, the match at 125 featured Spartan junior Tristan Lujan against Raymond Lopez, with the former notching a hard-fought 3-0 decision over the Eagle freshman. At 133 pounds, ninth-ranked MSU graduate Rayvon Foley recorded a solid 8-3 decision in his matchup with Jack Maida that ballooned the Green & White advantage to 14 points. Jordan Hamdan earned his second appearance in the lineup at 141, publishing a 4-1 win over Elijah White that tacked on three more Spartan points.
In the battle at 149, Peyton Omania earned his third consecutive start in the weight class and notched Michigan State's fifth consecutive decision in a 6-1 result against Patrick Ryan. With the 20-0 lead in hand, the Spartans turned to 17th-ranked Chase Saldate to continue the team's scoring onslaught. Saldate broke the streak of five-straight decisions with a major, dismantling Jack Nies in a 10-2 affair that pushed the MSU edge up to 24.
The final three bouts of the evening saw the Green & White escape Washington with a trio of decisions, starting with No. 33 Caleb Fish's high-scoring test against Caleb Campos that resulted in a 14-7 victory for MSU. The Spartans returned to the win column at 174 pounds with Luke Daly taking the mat against Lucas White, with the former compiling a gritty 4-3 win that placed Michigan State ahead by 30. In the final match of the evening, 20th-ranked Layne Malczewski composed a 7-2 showing that finalized the 33-0 rout.
