TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - With NCAA Championship berths on the line, Michigan State men's and women's cross country head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 11. The women's 6k is set for 10 a.m., while the men's 10k begins at 11 a.m.Â
The Michigan State women look to advance to their 22nd consecutive NCAA Championship after winning the Big Ten title in Ann Arbor on Oct. 23. The Spartans posted two all-conference finishes, led by graduate student Katie Osika's runner-up finish and junior Makenna Veen's ninth-place finish. MSU placed its top-seven runners in the top 50 to claim the title over second-place Michigan and third-place Wisconsin. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes (15th), senior Lauren Freeland (24th) and junior Emily Bardwell (28th) scored for the Spartans alongside Osika and Veen.Â
At last year's NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Hynes finished 24th overall for all-region honors. The Spartans rank third in the field behind No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 17 Toledo.Â
The Spartan men look to qualify for their second-straight NCAA Championship following a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. The 10k race will be the first at the distance for the Spartan men this season. Graduate student CarLee Stimpfel (5th) and freshman Riley Hough (14th) notched all-conference honors for MSU in Ann Arbor, while junior Andrew Nolan (17th), graduate student Fraser Wilson (25th) and junior Alexander Penski (34th) also scored for MSU.Â
Wilson finished 17th at last year's Great Lakes Regional for all-region honors. The men's race features three nationally-ranked teams, including No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 28 Michigan. The Spartans rank fifth in the Great Lakes region.Â
The top two teams out of the region receive automatic bids to next week's NCAA Championships. The NCAA selection show will air on NCAA.com on Saturday, Nov. 12, where the remaining 13 at-large teams will be announced. The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team will advance as individuals. Two individual at-larges are also selected.Â
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.Â
