
Spartans Drop Road Contest at #5 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Michigan State volleyball was defeated on the road Friday night, falling to No. 5-ranked Wisconsin, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-15). The Spartans started the match strong, playing the defending national champions to a tight first set and hitting .407, a team high for a 25-point set in B1G play.
Fifth year Rebecka Poljan led the team with seven kills on .357 hitting, followed by six kills for freshman Selin Aslayan and five for freshman Nil Okur. Okur and Poljan tied for the team-high in blocks at four, with Okur tallying MSU's lone solo block of the evening. Fifth year Zoe Nunez posted her fourth double-double of the season with 19 assists and 10 digs.
The Spartans hit .407 in set one, playing the defending national champions point-for-point outside of a late 3-0 run by the Badgers. MSU's .407 hitting percentage is the Spartans' best hitting performance in a 25-point set during B1G play. Set one featured plenty of back-and-forth action with Michigan State holding a 14-13 lead over Wisconsin mid-way through the frame. A Badger service error brought MSU within one point late, 21-20, but a 3-0 Wisconsin run gave UW a 24-20 advantage. Okur provided three kills and pair of blocks for Michigan State in the first set.
Michigan State led by as many as three points early in set two, but a series of Badger runs put the set out of reach as Wisconsin went on 9-2 and 7-0 runs. A Spartan timeout following the 9-2 run saw Michigan State score back-to-back points to pull back within a pair, but Wisconsin's 7-0 run ensued to give UW a 22-13 lead late. Nunez's second kill of the night stopped the Badger run to put the Spartans back on the board.
Wisconsin opened the third set on a 6-1 run, but the Spartans battled back to bring the score within one, 8-7 following kills from Poljan and freshman Evie Doezema and an ace by freshman Jayhlin Swain. Michigan State kept things close until a 7-1 Badger run opened a 22-13 advantage.
Up Next: It's a short turnaround for Michigan State who is in the middle of a stretch that will see the team play three games in six days. The Spartans return to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 for a 2:00 p.m. match at home against Indiana in the Breslin Center. Indiana is coming off a 3-1 upset over No. 25-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor.
