Spartans Ready for Road Test at No. 8 Maryland

MSU opens up a two-game road swing.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer hits the road for two games, beginning with No. 8 Maryland on Friday, Oct. 21 in College Park at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.Â
The Spartans are 6-5-2 overall this season and 3-1-1 in Big Ten action. Michigan State has won their last two games and four of its last five. Maryland is 7-2-4 and 3-0-3 in league play, standing atop the Big Ten standings.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST MARYLAND
The series between the Spartans and Terrapins stands 6-6-5 overall. Over the last five games, Maryland leads the series 3-1-1, including the last two. In College Park, the series is tied 3-3-1. The last time MSU defeated Maryland was in 2018 when the Spartans captured a 2-0 win on the road.
Last season, the Terps won 3-1 in East Lansing in the regular-season finale. Zach Babiak scored the only goal for the Spartans.
LOOKING AT THE TERRAPINS
Maryland is currently 7-2-4 overall and 3-0-3 in the Big Ten, which is tied for first in the league standings. Last time out, Maryland fell to High Point, 2-1, in College Park. The Terps have Big Ten wins over Rutgers, Ohio State and Michigan.
The Terrapins are third in the league in goals scored with 25. Malcolm Johnston is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with give goals scored. Nick Richardson is tied for second in assists in the conference with six, while Joshua Bolma is tied for fifth with give helpers.
NEW LOOK SPARTANS
Michigan State's rookies have had solid campaigns. Transfers Elijah Howe and Owen Finnerty have been solid fixtures in the Spartan offense starting 12 and 13 games, respectively.
Freshmen Jack Guggemos, Jake Spadafora and Jeremy Sharp have all started at least two games this season. Freshman Jonathan Stout has come on strong of late with three goal and four assists for a total of 10 points. Stout scored a goal against Michigan on Sept. 27 and scored two goals against Rutgers on Oct. 16. Guggemos is fifth on the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points.
BEST OF THE BEST
Michigan State head coach Damon Rensing is fifth in the Big Ten in overall winning percentage among B1G coaches (ranked by overall winning percentage at Big Ten schools). Rensing currently holds a 136-99-37 record at MSU (.568).
RISING THE CHARTS
Senior midfielder Louis Sala stands tied for second in the league in assists with six. He is one helper away from tying senior midfielder Jack Beck's team high of seven assists last season. Freshman forward Jonathan Stout is now fifth in the Big Ten in points per game with 1.25. He has three goals and four assists for 11 points in eight games. Michigan State's six assists against  Rutgers on Oct. 16 are tied for the second most in the Big Ten this season.
LOGGING IN THE MINUTES
There are four Spartans who have surpassed 1,000 minutes this season, including  senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty (1,156) and sophomore defender Josh Adam (1,144). Senior Jack Beck (1,072) and junior midfielder Jack Zugay (1,036) have also passed the 1,000 minute mark.
MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
Freshman forward Jonathan Stout entered last Sunday's game against Rutgers with one goal and two assists on the season, and doubled that total with two goals and two helpers on the day. Stout is now tied for first in points with junior forward Greyson Mercer with 10 each.

The Spartans have won their last two matches overall and are unbeaten in five of their last six matches. Sunday's match was MSU's penultimate home match, as the Green & White improved to 6-2 at DeMartin Stadium. The  win moved Michigan State to 6-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in B1G action to tie for second in the league standings.
FINNERTY EARNS B1G HONOR
Senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty earned the Spartans' first Player of the Week honor of the season after MSU went 2-0-0 on Oct. 3. The goalkeeper registered a pair of clean sheets to lead Michigan State to wins over Michigan and Wisconsin.
In the Battle of the Big Bear Trophy on Sept. 27, Finnerty, a Michigan transfer, earned MSU's first shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over the Wolverines. He collected seven saves in the victory. Against Wisconsin on Oct. 2, the Spartans earned a 1-0 win with the senior capturing five saves. He helped MSU to back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since the 2017 season.Â
PACKING THE HOUSE
Michigan State historically is among the nation's best in packing DeMartin Stadium. This week, MSU is fourth in the nation in attendance, averaging 2,305 fans per game. The Spartans are first in the Big Ten ahead Maryland (2,209) and Indiana (2,046), who stand fifth and sixth in the nation respectively. MSU's largest crowd of the season was the 3,047 fans that packed DeMartin to watch MSU beat Michigan on Sept. 27.
