10/1/2022 4:48:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Following one of the most impressive victories in program history, Michigan State women's soccer returns to work on Sunday, Oct. 2, as the Spartans face off with the Maryland Terrapins in a 1 p.m. contest on Ludwig Field.
HEAD COACH JEFF HOSLER SAID…
"We just focus on the day. Our last win was great, but it's about being better today. We just have to get right back to it. Maryland is a very good opponent. They are athletic, they play hard, they are well coached, and they get after it. Maryland keeps numbers behind the ball and are very tough to break down, so we will have to be sharp in order to get the results we want."
KICKIN' IT
The Green & White notched the signature win of the Jeff Hosler era Thursday, as the Spartans toppled the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions by a 2-1 margin on the road. Michigan State is riding a six-game unbeaten streak dating to a Sept. 8. scoreless draw with Oakland. MSU is off to its best start to Big Ten play in program history, boasting a 3-0-1 league record in addition to the team's 8-1-3 overall ledger through this point in the year. In addition to Sunday's contest, graduate defender Samantha White is set to break the Michigan State program record for career games started. White is in position to notch her 80th start against the Terrapins.
TESTING THE TERRAPINS
First-year skipper and Big Ten veteran Meghan Ryan Nemzer leads Maryland into its 12th contest of the season boasting a 2-4-5 overall record with a 1-3 start to league play. The Terrapins have fallen in each of their last three conference games following their thrilling 1-0 win over Michigan on Sept. 16. UMD dropped its most recent home game against Illinois on Sept. 22, and fell by one goal apiece at then-No. 4 Rutgers and Big Ten-leading Wisconsin. Senior forward Alina Stahl leads Maryland in both goals and points, sending in a quartet of scores with two assists on the year for a total of 10 points. In goal, senior keeper Madeline Smith leads the squad in saves with 26 and has started in eight-of-11 games for the Terrapins. She owns a save percentage of .765 this year.
STORY OF THE SERIES: MARYLAND
Michigan State and Maryland are deadlocked in a relatively new, but highly competitive all-time series. Each squad has registered two wins apiece and has combined for three draws since the first meeting in 2014 when Maryland joined the Big Ten. The Spartans have yet to record a win on Ludwig Field, as MSU has lost one game and battled for all three ties in the series on the road. MSU won the most recent meeting of the two programs on Oct. 21 of last season, when the Green & White booked a 2-0 win at home. Ava Cook notched the game-winning goal against the Terrapins in the 18th minute
LION TAMERS
Michigan State recorded its highest ranked win in at least a decade on Thursday, Sept. 29, as the Spartans stunned the hometown fans in a 2-1 road win over sixth-ranked Penn State. In the 30th all-time meeting between the two schools, MSU registered its first-ever win over the Nittany Lions on the road. The Green & White had previously been 0-11 in games played on Jeffrey Field. The Spartans improved to 2-1 against opponents ranked in the top-25, and have won each of their last two ranked matchups dating back to a 4-2 win over then-No. 19 Colorado in East Lansing. Sophomore forward Jordyn Wickes logged her fourth goal of the season and published what proved to be the game-winner in the 70th minute of action.
