ANN ARBOR, Mich. – After taking part in the ITA Midwest Regionals last weekend, the Michigan State women's tennis team continues its fall slate Friday through Sunday, Oct. 1-3, at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Hosted by Big Ten rival Michigan, the Spartans will send four entrants to the tournament. Seniors Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz will make the trek south, as will freshman Charlotte Gisclon. Additionally, graduate student Mary Lewis will make her season debut this weekend, with Lewis and Pietrowicz using it as a tune-up for the doubles tournament at next week's ITA All-American Championships. Lewis and Pietrowicz are the No. 28-ranked pairing in the nation entering the season.
MSU is coming off an event that saw senior Nicole Stephens fall one set short of the ITA Regional quarterfinals, as she notched a pair of singles victories in Urbana, Illinois. Pietrowicz, sophomore Ayshe Can and Gisclon all recorded victories in the main singles bracket as well.
The Midwest Regionals included doubles wins as well, with Stephens and Gisclon claiming their first victory together in their matchup with DePaul's Maddie Yerger and Marija Jovicic, before falling to Ashley Yeah/Megan Heuser pair from Illinois. For Can and Lemonds, the duo moved to 6-4 all-time, defeating a Marquette pairing of Natalija Popovic and Andie Weise, but got knocked off by the Denise Stoica/Alina Mukhortova duo from Wisconsin.
Following this weekend's tournament, the Lewis/Pietrowicz duo will head to Charleston, South Carolina for the ITA All-Americans from Oct. 4-10, while the rest of the team will take part in the Northwestern Invite on Oct. 8-10.
