Mutatu Magic Leads MSU Past Duquesne Tuesday
9/21/2021 10:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The senior forward scored his fourth goal in the last three games.
East Lansing, Mich. - Senior forward Farai Mutatu continued his hot streak netting the game-winning goal to lead Michigan State men's soccer past Duquesne, 1-0, Tuesday at a rain-drenched DeMartin Stadium.
With the victory, Michigan State is now 4-3-1 and 0-0-1 in B1G action this season, while Duquesne falls to 5-3-0 so far this year. The Spartans are now undefeated in their last three games with a 2-0-1 mark.
"All in all, we will definitely take a win. I asked this team to be a winning team, and not just 'we played good soccer.' So, we got our first shutout of the year," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I think when you add everything up between tough road games and not a lot of rest, we got back at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. I thought our leaders were really, really good, Michael Miller, Farai Mutatu and Jack Beck. Those guys really led. Our backline was really good today, and it was good to have Hunter Morse back in the net."
The Dukes came out fast with the first two shots of the game, before redshirt-sophomore forward Kellan Landefeld had MSU's first shot in the ninth minute.
The Spartans broke through in the 16th minute. After a Harper Cook foul, senior midfielder Jack Beck delivered a perfect service to the head of Mutatu. Beck now has had at least one assist in the last four games and leads the team with six assists, while Mutatu leads the team win five goals.
"All of our midfielders are playing well. From front to back, they were all good today, and we got a clean sheet. When we move the ball well defensively as a team, it makes it easier for me. I just have to keep being ready, and the services will keep coming," Mutatu said.
In the second half, the Spartans searched for their second goal. Despite 12 second-half shots, they were unable to find the back of the net again. Senior Michael Miller and Mutatu were both active in the box in the second half.
The Dukes would not go away quietly. Late in the second half, Duquesne made one final push. In the 85th minute, both Ryan Goodhew and Maxi Hopfer fired off shots, but the Spartan defense stood tall.
The Spartans will continue their three-game homestand, hosting Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m., which is a doubleheader with the MSU women's team. It is also Alumni Day for both teams.
