SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Michigan State senior James Piot shot a 4-over-par 74 in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at Grayhawk Golf Club. Piot is 3-over-par 143 (69-74) and in a tie for 33rd place heading into Sunday's third round.

"It was a little bit tougher out there today," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "He had a few sloppy moments and when you don't hit it or putt as well on a tough golf course, that will hurt you. He'll bounce back and has a chance to play his way back in tomorrow."
"I just didn't strike it as well today as I did yesterday," Piot said. "I had a few sloppy shots but did my best to manage it and give myself a chance to survive and get back into it tomorrow."
Piot started the day on the 10th hole and made the turn at 3-over-par after a trio of bogeys. He was at 5-over-par through 12 holes, but on the par-5, 562-yard No. 4, Piot recorded an eagle – one of just six in the tournament so far. A bogey on the third-to-last hole of the day sent him back to 4-over-par, which is where he ended the day.
Piot will return to action in the third round of the tournament on Sunday, teeing off at 4:32 p.m. ET. Following the conclusion of Sunday's competition, the top nine individuals not a part of one of the 15 advancing teams will move on to Monday's final round.
