EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team improved to 2-1 in Big Ten play with a 5-2 victory over Purdue on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead into singles play after claiming the doubles point, as Josh Mukherjee and Nick Williams beat Michal Wozniak and Milledge Cossu at No. 1, 6-3, and Carson Gates and John Carlin topped Mateo Julio and Sebastian Welch at No. 2, 6-2. Drew Keene and Reed Crocker were up at No. 3, 5-2, but the match went unfinished with the Spartan point already secured.
Anthony Pero made quick work of Santiago Galan on the fourth court in singles, 6-4, 6-0, to extend MSU's advantage to 2-0.
The Boilermakers (1-2) got on the board as Mateo beat Mukherjee at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, but Drew Keene pushed MSU back up by two points with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles against Cossu.
Williams fell to Welch on the second court, but the Spartans won the final two matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to record the 5-2 victory. Gates defeated Wozniak on the third court, 7-5, 6-3, while Baylis won at No. 5 over Tomasz Dudek, 7-6, 6-3.
"We played well to win the doubles point, and carried that momentum into singles," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "Purdue did make a push, but we withstood their charge and were able to hold them off with some big wins to close it out. The guys have definitely put in the work, and it was rewarding to win a road match in the Big Ten. We're looking forward to another great opportunity tomorrow at Indiana."
The Spartans (2-3, 2-1 Big Ten) return to action Sunday at noon to face Indiana in Bloomington at the IU Tennis Center. Live video will be available via Playsight at iuhoosiers.com.
