Lewis and Pietrowicz Fall in Consolation Semifinals of ITA Fall Nationals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Michigan State women's tennis pairing of graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz put together a run to the consolation semifinals at the ITA National Fall Championships, but saw their consolation championship hopes end Saturday night at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California.
Despite taking the first set in the main draw opener on Thursday, the Spartan duo dropped the match by a 7-5, 4-6, 10-12 score to Old Dominion's Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yuliia Starodubtseva.
In a late-night match on Friday, Lewis and Pietrowicz pulled off a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stanford's Niluka Madurawe and Alexandra Yepifanova in the consolation bracket's first round.
Saturday afternoon saw the MSU pairing take on Iowa State's Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh in the consolation quarterfinals, where Lewis and Pietrowicz picked up a spot in the consolation semifinals with a 6-3 6-4 win.
Later in the day on Saturday, the Spartans faced Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein from Florida, but the Gator duo defeated Lewis and Pietrowicz in a tiebreaker, 6-2 7-6(7), to end their stay in San Diego.
Lewis and Pietrowicz, along with the rest of the Michigan State team, will open their spring schedule on Jan. 22 at Notre Dame.
