COLUMBUS, Ohio – After becoming the first Spartan doubles pairing to advance to the semifinals of an Intercollegiate Tennis Association main draw event since at least 1998, graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz of the Michigan State women's tennis team completed ITA Super Regionals play Saturday morning at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The No. 28-ranked doubles pairing in the nation were two of the three Spartans to take part in the tournament, as senior Nicole Stephens joined Lewis as MSU representatives in the singles open main draw.
MSU opened the tournament with Lewis and Pietrowicz winning back-to-back matches on Friday morning in the doubles open, as the Spartan duo faced off with Julia Fliegner and Merri Kelly from rival Michigan in the first round. In tight battle that went to a tiebreaker, Lewis and Pietrowicz defeated the Wolverine pairing by an 8-7(3) score. The MSU team then moved on to face Notre Dame's Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman in the quarterfinals, where Lewis and Pietrowicz built an early lead before the Fighting Irish duo fought back, with the Spartans holding on late to secure a 8-7(7) victory.
Stephens and Lewis then began singles play Friday afternoon, but Stephens' day ended early when Fliegner earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over the MSU senior. Lewis found success in the singles draw to continue a strong day, as the Spartan graduate student beat UM's Kelly in a 6-4, 6-3 match.
Saturday opened with Lewis and Pietrowicz in the Super Regional semifinal round, seeing their historic run end in an 8-3 loss to Ohio State's Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff.
Lewis closed out the Spartans' stay in Columbus shortly after, falling to Northwestern's Clarissa Hand in the singles Round-of-16 by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Michigan State finishes its fall slate next weekend, taking part in the Toledo Invite from Oct. 29-31.
