East Lansing, Mich. – Meet one, take two.
Michigan State swimming and diving tries for a second time to kick off its 2021 campaign this weekend swimming at Michigan with the Rutgers women. The men will race on Friday, while the women and all divers will be in action on Saturday.
The season was to begin last Saturday at Purdue with the Illinois women, but MSU's participation was canceled due to Covid-19 concerns. The extra week has the programs more than ready to get into the pool.
"Last week was a disappointment in terms of cancelation, but we are more than ready to finally have an opportunity to get into the pool and race other teams," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "But this is the state of college athletics right now – and we have to be flexible and adaptable. We're going to head to Ann Arbor and give it our best."

A total of 16 seniors lead MSU into the weekend; nine women (Taylor Arnold, Olivia Chick, Taylor Contino, Marie Dickson, Amanda Ling, Erin Neely, Abbey Neveling, Erin Szara, and Elise Turke) and seven men (Aidan Farley, Phillip Meffert, Guy Moskovich, Josh Pascua, Charlie Ryan, Lucas Smiarowski, and Weston Youngblood). Divers Ling and Neely were All-America selections based on their qualifying for the NCAA zone meet.
Without racing results from the opening weekend, the biggest news of the last week was that on Tuesday, Michigan State's women's team was announced as the top GPA in the country, and the men's team was ranked sixth among Division I programs as the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced its Scholar All-America teams.
MSU's women team led the way across all three divisions with its 3.87 team GPA, and the men's squad ranked sixth among Division I teams with a 3.71, trailing American, Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard and Stanford.
Michigan State's men claimed the top team honor in the fall of 2019, and graduated a pair of Academic All-Americans in Scott Piper and Nehemiah Mork who both compiled perfect 4.0 GPA's over their four years. MSU has a pair of women who look like they will do the same this spring in Taylor Arnold and Amanda Ling. A total of 43 swimmers qualified for Academic All-Big Ten honors last year.
