Swim Squads Earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors
6/30/2020 8:49:00 AM | Swimming and Diving
East Lansing, Mich. -- The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has selected the Michigan State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams for Scholar All-American honors. Michigan State was one of 461 schools to receive the award for the Spring semester. Â Teams were selected on the basis of their Spring grade point averages and represent 17,982 student-athletes.Â
CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart mentioned the efforts of Coach Gianiodis noting that "No team was unaffected by this Spring's pandemic but Athletic Director Bill Beekman and President Dr. Samuel Stanley can and should be proud of their team and the work of head coach Matt Gianiodis and his staff."Â
Additional institutional adjustments to grading systems resulted in GPAs nearly one-quarter letter grade higher than previously. As a result, the CSCAA will not be publishing team GPAs for this round of distinction nor releasing a team ranking. Â In the fall, both the mens and women's teams earned Scholar All-American Top-10 distinction: Â the men ranked fourth, while the Spartan women tied for seventh for the fall semester.
Gianiodis has seen his team earn multiple team and individual honors throughout the spring, "Of course, I'm very proud of my team and the overall culture in our program," noted the mentor, who has been on the Spartan pool deck for 22 seasons, 17 as the head coach.  "Our student-athletes have been exceptional, and our academic coordinator, Jeremy Flynn, also deserves an exceptional amount of credit."
Individual CSCAA Scholar All-America selections will be announced next week.
