Spartan Gymnastics Earns B1G Road Win at Rutgers Saturday

Junior Lea Mitchell captures her fourth all-around title of the season with a 39.300.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Michigan State gymnastics earned its second Big Ten win of the season, defeating Rutgers by a score of 195.675-193.800, on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers Athletic Center (RAC), in a meet that was nationally televised on the Big Ten Network.
MSU improves to 2-2 in the Big Ten with the road win Saturday.
The Spartans posted a 48.775 on vault, 48.975 on bars, 48.875 on beam and a 49.050 on floor for the winning score of 195.675. Rutgers registered a 48.300 on vault, 47.550 on bars, 49.100 on beam and a 48.850 on floor for a final team score of 193.800.
Junior Lea Mitchell earned her fourth all-around title of the season and second-consecutive top gymnast honors, recording a 39.300. Rutgers' Hannah Joyner placed second with a score of 39.150. Freshman Nyah Smith finished in third in the all-around competition with a 39.100.
Beginning the meet on bars, MSU tallied a team score of 48.975. Freshman Jori Jackard placed second with a 9.850, her fourth-consecutive 9.800 or higher. Juniors Tristan Brown and Lea Mitchell tied for third with matching scores of 9.825. Junior Madison McHale posted a 9.750 to place fifth, while freshman Nyah Smith tied for sixth with a 9.725 with Rutgers' Abigail Karolewski. Shannon Farrell of Rutgers won bars with a 9.875.
Transitioning to vault for the second rotation, the Spartans posted a score of 48.775. Putting only five competitors up on the event, Smith and senior Gabriella Douglas earned a share of the vault title with scores of 9.825. Smith earned her fifth 9.800 or higher of the season and tied her career-best score, while Douglas logged her third-consecutive 9.825 to tie her season-high. Mitchell posted a score of 9.750 to tie for fifth with Rutgers' Jenna Ferguson and sophomore Ashley Hofelich took seventh with a 9.725.
Continuing on to floor exercise for the third rotation, Michigan State scored a 49.050 as a team, for the Spartans' fourth 49.000 or higher on floor this season. Mitchell continued to shine on floor exercise as she earned top gymnast honors for her fourth floor title of the season. Mitchell registered a 9.900 for top honors, which was her third score of 9.900-plus of the season. Douglas tied for third with a 9.850 and Hofelich posted a 9.825 for fifth place.
In the fourth and final rotation, the Spartans took to the beam and earned a team score of 48.875. Mitchell tied for second with Joyner of Rutgers, posting a 9.825. There was a four-way tie for fourth place, with sophomore Alaina Rayon and Smith earning matching 9.800's with Ferguson and Emily Drauss from the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers' Erin McLachlan recorded a 9.900 to earn top honors on beam.
