Nine Spartans make the podium on Saturday, including two Big Ten runner-ups and Big Ten Champion Morgan Beadlescomb.
GENEVA, Ohio – Michigan State track and field concluded the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a strong fight to the finish, backed by junior Morgan Beadlescomb's Big Ten title in the men's 5,000m, at the SPIRE Indoor Track Facility in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.
Â
After anchoring the second place men's DMR team on day one, Beadlescomb won the Big Ten title in the men's 5,000m in one of the last events of the meet. In a race that came down to the finish, Beadlescomb ran 13:50.25 to earn his first Big Ten title and All-Big Ten accolades.
Â
"He's turning into one of the elite distance runners in the country, in an elite field," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "His progress has been great, and it's a tribute to him trusting us and doing a lot of work. There's a lot of factors in this, and I have to put a lot of it on his shoulders."
Â
Beadlescomb is the first Spartan to win the men's 5,000m Big Ten indoor title since Jim Jurcevich won the event in 1999 with a time of 14:07.23.
Â
Junior Lindsey Rudden and sophomore Jenna Magness earned Big Ten runner-up accolades in the women's 800m run and 5,000m run, respectively, to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors. Rudden clocked in at 2:07.47 for second place in the 800m, while Magness had a PR of 16:08.74 in the 5,000m to finish second overall.
Â
"I was really pleased with those in the runner-up positions. Lindsey Rudden had a really long weekend; she ran in the 800m prelims, came back and anchored the DM that was really, really competitive and made it to the national championship. Then to come back here and try to win a championship in the 800m, in really what was her first Big Ten Championships. Jenna was outstanding; she had great poise, she has great instincts," Drenth said.
Â
Senior Sarah Anderson also earned a podium spot in the 800m, placing sixth in 2:08.15. Senior Jeralyn Poe, who earned a podium spot on Friday in the 3,000m, took fourth in the 5,000m with a time of 16:18.98.
Â
"JP was one of the best doublers in kids that ran the 3,000 and the 5,000m on the women's side," Drenth said. "That's a really difficult combination and to be in the hunt in both of them and run as well as she did, I thought she was fantastic."
Â
In the men's and women's mile run, the Spartans saw two athletes reach the podium in sophomores Katie Osika and John Petruno, running against competitive fields. Osika placed seventh, turning in a time of 4:47.94. On the men's side, Petruno tied for seventh in 4:11.45.
Â
Junior Brooke Bogan took sixth place in a fast field of the women's 60m dash, posting a time of 7.47, to represent the Spartan sprinters.
Â
In the field, junior Jerimiah Evans placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 18.45m.
Â
In the women's unseeded 5,000m, junior Maggie Farrell placed first in 16:48.9 running against the clock.
Â
"I was proud of the energy for a variety of reasons, but really thinking about outdoor and the progress," Drenth said. "They're getting an understanding of what's necessary in how to behave, expectations as teammates; those are the things that are signs of growth and I thought we saw that."
Â
The men's and women's DMR teams that placed second on the first day of competition, earned second-team All-Big Ten accolades.
Â
The Spartan women's DMR team of senior Annie Fuller, junior Brooke Bogan, senior Dillon McClintock and junior Lindsey Rudden placed second overall with a time of 11:02.82. The men's DMR followed suit with a second-place performance, ran by sophomore Brayden Law, freshman Zach DiStefano, sophomore Jalen Smith and junior Morgan Beadlescomb in 9:42.89.
