Spartan Tennis Falls to No. 3 Georgia in Opening Match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend

MSU looks to bounce back on Sunday against Furman to conclude ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
ATHENS, Ga. – Michigan State women's tennis fell to No. 3 Georgia, 7-0, at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Center in Athens, Georgia, as part of the first match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Earlier in the afternoon, Notre Dame defeated Furman, 4-2. MSU and Furman will play in the second match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend tomorrow morning in Athens.
"Georgia is a very good team, probably the best team we will play all year and we had our chances," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We need to take the confidence that we can play with anyone into tomorrow."
In doubles play, the duo of senior Samantha Memije and sophomore Nicole Stephens improved to 2-0 on the season as they defeated Georgia's Alee Clayton and Meg Kowalski at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore duo Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz fell to Katarina Jokic and Anna Hertel, 4-6, at first doubles. Georgia clinched the doubles point on court two, with junior Mary Lewis and sophomore Jennifer Timotin falling to Elena Christofi and Marta Gonzalez, 6-4.
On the singles courts, Georgia struck first, with Hertel defeating Stephens, 6-2, 6-2 on court four. No. 46 Gonzalez put up a win against Lemonds, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, to put the Bulldogs ahead by three.
With Georgia looking to clinch the match, it came down to No. 1 Lewis on court one and Memije on court two. Both players dropped the first set by only two points and rallied to comeback in the second set of their matches.
Memije battled with No. 19 Lea Ma of Georgia, before falling 6-4, 6-4, for the Bulldogs to clinch the match. Lewis fell to No. 17 Jokic, 7-5, 6-2, on court one.
Pietrowicz fell to Christofi, 6-3, 6-2, on court five and Timotin dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to No. 83 Coppoc.
