The junior records the best heptathlon finish in school history at the NCAA Championships.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Michigan State track & field redshirt-junior Nick Guerrant broke his own school record in the heptathlon on the way to a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Guerrant's 5,944 points topped the mark (5,783) he set just two weeks prior at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor. His third-place, First-Team All-American finish is the best in Spartan track & field heptathlon history, becoming the only two-time All-American in the event after placing 13th at last year's NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas.
"I'm on cloud nine, and it feels so great I finally put one together to represent my ability," Guerrant said. "I felt like this was the meet I could put it together because it was Nationals, and I had the crowd with me. I wanted to put a number out there so I could hold the record for awhile and it feels really good to put that up there."
Tim Ehrhardt (2015, First-Team) and Kurt Schneider (2014, Second-Team) are the only other MSU NCAA All-Americans in the heptathlon.
Stanford's Harrison Williams took the NCAA title with 6,042 points, while Gabe Moore of Arkansas was the runner-up at 5,975 points.
It's the third time Guerrant has set a new MSU track & field top mark in the heptathlon after breaking the record the first time at last season's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Starting the day off in the 60-meter hurdles Guerrant turned in a time of 8.30 seconds, the seventh-best of the day in a strong field of hurdlers. Moving on to the pole vault, Guerrant cleared 4.86 meters (15-11 ¼) to set a new personal record in the event, a huge improvement from the Big Ten Championships where his best mark was 4.55 meters (14-11). The height was good enough to tie for the third best of the day. He finished the day with a time of 2:45.33 in the 1,000-meter run.
"It's great to see all the hard work pay off for Nick," MSU multi-events coach Ceith Creekmur said. "It really couldn't have happened to a better kid. One of the old adages in the multis is you don't want to see a scoresheet until the vault is done, then some of the pressure comes off. When Nick cleared on his third attempt, I knew we were good and could relax heading into the 1,000."
The Spartans return to the track March 29-30 to begin the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina.
