Several Spartans set career highs on all four events Friday night.
CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - Michigan State gymnastics set a new season-high on the floor exercise for the third-straight week with a 49.200 as a team in a road Big Ten dual at Illinois Friday night at Huff Hall. The meet went down to the wire in the final rotation, with the Fighting Illini coming out on top by a score of 195.100-194.450.Â
Friday night marked the first time Michigan State has scored a 49.200 on floor as a team since the Big Ten Quad meet on March 15, 2014. Â
"I'm so proud of how the team brought energy, focus and attention to detail on three events," MSU associate head coach Nicole Jones said. "The meet didn't disappoint and it came down to the end. Unfortunately, we let some nerves get to us on beam we weren't able to finish the meet to our true potential. I know this will only light a fire under our team to come out better next weekend!"
The Spartans were led by a new career-high on floor from sophomore Lea Mitchell, who set the mark for a second time this season with a 9.925 to tie for the event win. Junior Gabriella Douglas, the Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week tied her career-high 9.900 on floor after setting the mark last week at No. 21 Minnesota on Feb. 2.Â
MSU recorded 48.700 on bars, 49.000 on vault, 49.200 on floor and 47.675 on beam for the total score of 194.450.
Illinois tallied 49.100 on vault, 48.400 on bars, 48.425 on beam and 49.175 on floor for the winning score of 195.100.
Starting on bars, the Spartans were led by a score of 9.800 from senior Jessica Ling and Mitchell, who both finished tied for third on the event.Â
Moving to vault for the second rotation, the Spartans scored a 49.000 as a team for the first time since March 19, 2016 at the Big Ten Championships. Douglas set a new career-high with a 9.850 to take third, while freshman Jenna Wicker also set a new career-high of 9.800. Sophomore Ashley Beatty and freshman Ashley Hofelich also each posted 9.800. Â
The Spartans continued to impress on floor during the third rotation as they have all season. Mitchell tied for first with her career-high 9.925 and Douglas took third with her personal best tying score of 9.900.Â
"Before the season started our floor workers and I talked about breaking the school record on floor and at the rate they're going, I have no doubt in their abilities," Jones said. "Each week they just keep turning it up a notch and feeding off one another's performances!"Â
The Spartans return to Jenison Field House next week for a Big Ten dual with Rutgers at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. Â
