
Spartans Fall To No. 4/2 Michigan On Friday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams fell to conference rival Michigan on Friday night at McCaffree Pool. The men fell to No. 4 ranked Michigan 131-67, and the women fell to the No. 2 ranked Wolverines 117-81.

"I'm really happy for the three freshman women who have earned their varsity letters," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "Lauren Biglin, Ava Boutrous, and Claire Schenden earned hers last week and then Gretchen Schultz did a nice job in the 50. We've got a couple weeks now, three for the men and two for the women, where we just have to get some rest and see how fast we can go at the Big Ten meet."

The men and women both opened the meet with third-place finishes in the 200-medley relay. The men's teams of Michael Schwers, Matthew Koueiter Josh Lantow and Payton Woods clocked a time of 1:33.43. The women's team, Sam Villani, Erin Szara, Madeline Reilly and Dom Meldrum finished with a time of 1:45.34.

Allie Heineman claimed a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle. She recorded a time of 23.98.

In the 50 freestyle, Payton Woods took third-place as he touched the pad at 20.91.

The Spartan women took another second-place finish in the 200 IM as Abbey Neveling finished with a time of 2:06.30.

Schwers placed third in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 49.51. Shortly after, Claire Schenden took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.90.
Ana Sortland and Erin Szara took second and third place in the 100 breaststroke, respectively. Sortland finished with a time of 1:03.74 and Szara with 1:04.37. For the men, Jonathan Lee took second, clocking in at 56.99.

On the diving side, Morgan Wellenzohn placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 286.49 and Julia Oppedisano took second with a score of 265.35. Both of their scores were NCAA Zone qualifiers.

The Spartans look ahead to the Big Ten Championships. The women will head to Bloomington, Ind. on Feb. 20-Feb. 23. The men will compete Feb. 27-March 2 in Iowa City, Iowa.
