The Spartans and Gophers end in a tie on the road in Minneapolis.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Michigan State women's soccer battled to a 0-0 draw with Minnesota on the road on Thursday night. This is the second consecutive meeting that the Spartans and Gophers have resulted in a draw.
MSU is now 8-3-1 on the season, with a 1-2-1 mark in conference play, while Minnesota is 2-8-3, with a 1-3-1 Big Ten record.
Although the shot count was favored toward the Gophers, 24-8, Michigan State held its own in a hard-fought physical battle on the road.
"Lauren (Kozal) was absolutely special throughout. We expected them, we talked about it in our pregame, to come at us," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "They're a good team, despite their record. Very good team, very dangerous team. Lauren was special with some key saves, but our whole backline really hung in there. It was really about competing as a team, being gritty and hanging on and having Lauren back there really helped."
In the first half, it was all redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal, who had three saves in the opening 20 minutes of the half to counter the Minnesota attack.
The Spartans started to put more pressure on the Gophers as the first 45 came to a close, but Minnesota ended the half with a 9-3 shot advantage.
Senior captain Sadie Misiewicz gave Michigan State their first scoring opportunity early on in the second half, firing a shot that Minnesota goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen was able to punch away.
Kozal continued to dominate in net in the second 45, collecting five additional saves.
With the game scoreless at the end of 90 minutes, the game would go to double overtime before resulting in a draw.
In double overtime, freshman defender Bria Schrotenboer, who played every minute of the match, put the grit of the Spartan defense on display, as she blocked two consecutive shots from close-range to fend off the Gophers.
MSU had a flurry of shots in the second overtime period, outshooting Minnesota, 4-3, while Kozal reached a new career high of nine saves.
"The 50-50 balls, as the game went on down the stretch we pretty much dominated it, especially in the last five minutes of regulation and the last five minutes of the first overtime; I felt like we were really putting them back in their end, just a lot of tired legs," Saxton said. "We really had a couple of chances deep in their end in the first overtime, we just weren't able to execute. Just had to hang in there and road games are tough; any kind of road games in the Big Ten are tough going on the road."
UP NEXT: The Spartans return home on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a 1 p.m. matchup with Iowa. MSU looks to improve on its undefeated 6-0-0 record at DeMartin Stadium this season.
