Both sides will traverse the 5k course in Dexter, Michigan on Friday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State cross country will send younger runners from both sides to the EMU Fall Classic at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Michigan, on Friday afternoon for the final regular-season race of the year.
Â
Both the men and women will transition back to a shorter 5k distance for the first time since the season-opening Jeff Drenth Memorial race on Aug. 30. The women's race is set to begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men's race at 5 p.m.
Â
Friday's race provides an opportunity for the younger Spartan athletes to compete for the Green and White one more time before the conclusion of the cross country season.
Â
"I think just one more opportunity for them to compete is really what we're going for," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "For a lot of the freshmen, I think the value is they go back to a distance they ran in high school and really get to see if they've made any progress. I think they have a better understanding of how training works and how they're evolving – most of them will see personal-bests, and it's quite competitive."
Â
The Spartan women moved up one spot to No. 9 in this week's USTFCCCA National Division I Coaches' Poll after a fifth-place finish at the prestigious Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational last week.
Â
Michigan State's top runners will not compete at EMU, giving them a chance to continue training prior to the start of the post season.
Â
"We've got to train and regroup physically and emotionally this week with both groups," Drenth said. "The women can't sit still; I think they need to think about what they can do to make this even more competitive. On the men's side, they just need to regroup. We're training at a level that was not indicated at the meet at Wisconsin and from my standpoint; they have to recognize and use this week as an opportunity for serious growth."
Â
Championship season begins next week for Spartan cross country as runners will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the 2019 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3.
