EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State wrestling team broke out on Sunday, January 27, defeating University of Maryland by a final score of 28-12. Michigan State won five bouts by way of bonus points en route to their second Big Ten victory of the season.
With a win on Sunday the Spartans improved to 5-6 overall on the year with a 2-4 mark in Big Ten action. This is best Big Ten record for MSU since the 2009 season in which they defeated Michigan and Purdue.
Starting at 125 pounds, sophomore and No. 7-ranked Rayvon Foley got the Spartans off on the right foot earning a 17-2 tech fall over Maryland's Brandon Cray. Foley improved his season record to 24-1 overall and 10-0 in duals with his seventh tech fall of the year.
Redshirt senior Anthony Tutolo earned a much needed victory at 133 pounds, winning by fall (4:30) over Orion Anderson to give the Spartans an 11-0 advantage through two weight classes.
Maryland took two straight at 141 and 149 pounds, but redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker broke that streak with an 8-4 decision at 157 pounds. Tucker led 5-4 in the third period, but a late reversal and riding time added to his lead.
