The junior won her first event of the season on Friday.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State women's gymnastics was led by a new career-high on the floor exercise from junior Ella Douglas, as she posted a 9.875 to tie for first place in MSU's Big Ten opener at No. 9 Michigan Friday night at the Crisler Center. The Wolverines won the dual by a score of 195.975-194.050.
Douglas tied for the top score on floor, along with Michigan's Olivia Karas. Sophomore Lea Mitchell took third on the floor with a 9.850 and freshman Ashley Hofelich scored a 9.825, as the Spartans took three of the top four spots in the event.
"Warmups went well tonight, they were enthusiastic, focused and blew through them with ease," MSU head coach Mike Rowe said. "We were set up for a great meet, and started off great on bars and vault; I believe staying within .6. On floor there were a couple of unfortunate miscues and we were .4 down from last weekend's score. Having to count two falls on beam killed our chances of achieving the 195+ that we were on track for. We have a long week this week, where we'll be able to work more pressure sets to keep that from happening again going forward. We got some great performances tonight, and we'll continue getting better."
Michigan State scored a season-best 48.975 on bars, to go with a 48.775 on vault, 48.750 on floor and 47.550 on the beam for its final score of 194.050. Michigan tallied a 49.150 on vault, 49.125 on bars, 48.900 on beam and 48.525 on the floor for the winning score of 195.975.
Starting on bars, senior Jessica Ling led the Spartans and tied for second, equaling her career-high of 9.875. She was followed closely by sophomore Tristan Brown, who set a new personal best with a 9.850. Mitchell posted 9.775, freshman Sydney Ewing scored a season-high 9.750 and Molly Hoerner-O'Malley turned in a 9.725.
Moving to vault for the second rotation, Hofelich was the top Spartan, posting a 9.800 for the second-straight week. Mitchell added a 9.775, while Douglas and sophomore Ashley Beatty both tallied 9.750. Freshman Jenna Wicker joined the lineup for the first time and scored 9.700.
MSU was on floor for the third rotation, and was led by a new career-high 9.875 from Douglas. Mitchell added a 9.850, while Hofelich tied her season-best with a 9.825. Ewing scored a 9.675 and freshman Alaina Raybon posted a 9.525.
Finishing the meet on the beam, sophomore Madison McHale made her season debut and was the top Spartan with a 9.775. Raybon followed with a 9.700 and junior Alexandra Hoyer scored a 9.600.
The Spartans return to Jenison Field House for the Big Ten Conference home opener on Sunday, Jan. 27 vs. Ohio State. It is Jan Howard Breast Cancer Awareness Day, with the dual meet set to begin at 4 p.m. ET, broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
