
Giuseppe Barone Steers MSU Soccer to 2-2 Draw at Yale

The Spartans trail for the first time this season.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - On the road for the second time this season, the No. 4 Michigan State men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw against Yale in New Haven, Conn. on Friday night. MSU met a familiar face as the Bulldogs' head coach, Kylie Stannard, is a former Michigan State associate head coach (2008-14).
With the tie, the Spartans remain undefeated this season with a 5-0-2 record, while Yale now stands 1-2-1.
"We dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the first half. All you can ask for is to have the team respond, and I thought that we collected ourselves at half time. We started to work and tied the game off a great ball from Giuseppe (Barone)," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We battled back in overtime and certainly had some chances. We didn't get the result that we wanted, but I think that will continue to grow as a team."
How it happened...
For the first time this season, the Spartans' opponent scored first off a set piece. Miguel Yuste started the action with a corner kick. The first charge by Matteo Ryan was saved by MSU senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague. After Hague lost control of the ball, Will Emerson found the loose ball to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage.
Yale put MSU in a new position as the Spartans trailed at half time for the first time this year.
Early in the second half after a Yale foul, the Spartans had a great chance with a blast from senior forward Hunter Barone that was stopped by Yale's Tom Wallenstein.
In the 72nd minute, senior midfielder Cody Sweatte earned a free kick just outside the penalty box. Junior midfielder Giuseppe Barone took the kick and bent it off the post and past Wallenstein to tie the score at 1-1. The goal was the second of the season for Barone. After the goal, MSU applied even more pressure looking to take the lead.
Michigan State used another set piece to take the 2-1 lead in the 85th minute. After the Bulldog foul in Spartan territory, Giuseppe Barone was once again in the mix taking the free kick. Redshirt-sophomore defender Patrick Nielsen flicked the ball past Wallenstein to score his first MSU goal to briefly put MSU ahead.
In their best offensive chance of the second half Yale capitalized tying the score 2-2 in the 88th minute. Nicky Downs drilled a shot past the diving Hague to tie the score once again and send the Spartans to overtime for the second time this season.
In the 94th minute, senior forward Hunter Barone was called for a hand ball in the box leading to a Yale penalty kick. Hague came up huge for the Spartans, stopping Yuste's attempt to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
MSU had its best opportunity in the first overtime period came when a blast by senior forward DeJuan Jones was corralled by Wallenstein, who made five saves on the night.
What's Next?
The Spartans remain on the road for another tough test. Michigan State will take on No. 8 Notre Dame on Monday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
