Starting the season with four games at home, Michigan State now improves to 2-0-1 this season. Canisius falls to 1-2.
"I thought we shared the ball, I thought we moved it pretty well and created some good chances. We found some goals so overall just our ball movement. Our off the ball movement in the first sixty minutes was pretty good," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
The Spartans found the back of the net quickly, scoring in the seventh minute"Yeah, I think so. Anytime you get a goal it gives you confidence and you don't press as much, you get relaxed so certainly that early goal helped. We had a couple more chances to really kind of put things away, but we didn't do that," Rensing said.
Senior forward DeJuan Jones scored his first goal of the season. Senior forward Ryan Sierakowskid  started the action with a long pass to junior forward Giuseppe Barone, who fired a pass of the post. Jones collected the ball and deposited the ball in the back of the net put MSU up 1-0.
Before the half came to an end, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead. Redshirt-freshman defender Nick Woodruff scored his first collegiate goal in the 40th minute. Another Spartan captured his first point in the Green and White, as sophomore defender Patrick Nielsen delivered the ball to Woodruff for the assist.
Early in the second half, Michigan State took a 3-0 advantage after senior Hunter Barone netted his first goal of the season in the 59th minute. He now has a goal and an assist this season.
Michigan State used two goalkeepers in senior Jimmy Hague and redshirt-freshman Hunter Morse, who saw his first action. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Golden Griffin fought back with two goals in less than four minutes to cut the MSU lead to 3-2.
The Spartans are back in action on Monday, Sept. 3 against UC Riverside at 1 p.m.
