Four Spartans Earn All-North Region Soccer Honors

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Michigan State men's soccer players earned United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's All-North Region Team honors as announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Wednesday. Junior midfielder Giuseppe Barone and redshirt-sophomore defender Patrick Nielsen picked up first-team accolades. Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague garnered second-team honors, while fellow senior forward Ryan Sierakowski was named to the third team.
This is the third consecutive season that four Spartans earned All-Region accolades with Hague joining Jimmy Fiscus, Ken Krolicki and DeJuan Jones taking honors last season. This is the third-straight season that Hague has earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region accolades, taking third team-honors last season.
Barone, a native of Kentwood, Michigan, has been the leader of the Spartan midfield, starting every game this season. He also earned Big Ten Midfielder of the Year honors and first-team all-conference accolades. Barone is second on the team in scoring this season with three goals and 10 assists for 16 points. Barone has one assist during Michigan State's run to the College Cup with a helper against UIC on Nov. 15.
Nielsen, who hails from Copenhagen, Denmark, is in his first season with Michigan State after transferring from Cincinnati. He has had an immediate impact, starting all 22 Â games. He leads the team in minutes played, logging in over 2,000 this season. Nielsen is part of the Spartan defense that has allowed only 17 goals in 22 games in 2018.
Hague, a native of Walled Lake, Michigan, has started all 22 games this season with a solid goals against average of  0.66. He is first in the Big Ten with a .840 save percentage. He also stands tied for second in shutouts with nine.
Sierakowski, who hails from McHenry, Illinois, makes his second appearance on the All-Region team. In 2016 as a sophomore, he was named to the first team. Sierakowski is looking to become the first Spartan to lead the team in scoring in all four years and currently is in first with eight goals and five assists for 21 points. He scored both goals in the Spartans' win over James Madison to send them to the College Cup.
Michigan State has arrived in Santa Barbara, California for the NCAA College Cup and will take on Akron on Friday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
