Pirmann departs after eight years as Spartan soccer assistant coach.
EAST LANSING - Michigan State soccer coach Ben Pirmann has been hired as an assistant coach for the United Soccer League's Memphis 901 FC, which will begin its inaugural season in 2019.
"On behalf of MSU soccer, it's alums, and MSU community, we want to thank Ben and Paige for 12 great years of service, dedication and passion towards Michigan State University, MSU Athletics and especially the MSU soccer family," MSU head coach Damon Rensing. "Ben has been part of MSU soccer for more than a decade as a player and a coach. There is no coincidence that MSU soccer has been successful for a majority of that time."
Overall, Pirmann spent 12 years as a Spartan as both a player and a coach. In eight seasons as an assistant, he helped the Spartans to four Elite Eight appearances. In 2018, Michigan State reached the College Cup for the first time in 50 years. MSU tied the school record with 14 wins, ending the season with a 14-5-4 mark.
"I wanted to say a special thanks to everyone in the Spartan soccer family, especially Coach Rensing. Although we are very excited for the next chapter of our lives, I am beyond humbled to have called Michigan State University my home for the past eight years," Pirmann said. "I am grateful to have learned from one of the best coaches in the country, not just about soccer but how to treat people with respect and humility. MSU will always be our home. Go Green!"Â
Pirmann was named the National Top Assistant Coach by College Soccer News in both 2016 and 2017.
The Lake Orion, Michigan, native also spent six seasons as the head coach of Detroit City FC in the National Premier Soccer League. Pirmann earned a 49-17-17 regular-season record with DCFC in the National Premier Soccer League.
"This is bittersweet losing Ben. Bitter because we are losing a great Spartan. Sweet because Ben is one of the brightest young soccer coaches in the U.S., and I am very happy to see Ben move to the professional ranks and pursue a dream of his to be a professional coach," Rensing said. "We wish Ben and Paige all the best in Memphis."
