EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State wrestling program hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for the 2018 Navy Classic on Saturday, November 17 at the Wesley Brown Field House. Saturday also marks the Spartans first appearance in a team competition this season.
"I'm looking forward to seeing our guys compete in a team competition environment," said MSU head coach Roger Chandler. "Open tournaments are great and competition is always good. However, when you're at a tournament where your individual performance affects the team it changes everything. Our guys will see where bonus points matter. The difference between just a decision and major decision or fall effects things in a big way."
Air Force, American, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, Cleveland State, Delaware Valley, Edinboro, George Mason, Indiana, Kent State, Navy, Ohio, Old Dominion and Oregon State will be competing at the event in addition to Michigan State. Oregon State and Kent State are both ranked in the InterMat Tournament Top 25.
"There are a lot of very solid teams that we don't normally see throughout the year which is great," said Chandler. "However, I know those teams are looking forward to competing against a Big Ten team like Michigan State. Our guys need to be ready to go from the sound of the first whistle."
