Michigan State men's tennis started off strong against Vanderbilt by winning the doubles point, but Vanderbilt rallied back at singles and took the win, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.
"Great effort but tough loss," MSU head coach Gene Orlando said. "We played a great doubles point to take a 1-0 lead into singles. However, Vanderbilt's singles jumped on us and won all of its first sets. We made a run late in second sets, but Vandy closed down our momentum."
Senior Michael Dube and freshman Josh Mukherjee took the win at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, over George Harwell and Lachlan McPhee to get the Spartans started. Seniors Brett Forman and Jasper Koenen clinched the doubles point, 6-3, defeating Cam Klinger and Billy Rowe to put the Spartans up, 1-0.
In singles, Koenen fell to Maxwell Freeman, 6-1, 6-1, and Dube dropped to Cameron Klinger, 6-2, 6-3. Forman lost to No. 50 Daniel Valent, 6-2, 6-2. Mukherjee took Rowe to three sets, but fell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to give Vanderbilt the win.
Freshman Davis Wong also took his match to three sets, and with Baker Newman leading in the third set, 4-3, Wong retired. In the last match of the day, freshman John Carlin dropped, 6-4, 6-3.
"There are definitely a lot of positives to take away from the weekend," Orlando said. "We will continue to grow and improve each week and be ready for our next challenge: Princeton."
