LINCOLN, Neb. - The Michigan State men's tennis team dropped a hard fought 4-3 battle to Nebraska on Friday, April 21. Michigan State moves to 10-16 on the year and 0-10 in the Big Ten Conference.
"Tough loss for the Spartans tonight," said head coach Gene Orlando. "Two evenly match teams and we gave it all we had but we came up just short. It is always tough to win on the road and of course in the Big Ten. We are moving on to Iowa."
In doubles action, sophomore Colin Harvey and junior Michael Dube dropped a 6-0 decision at the No. 1 spot but junior Jasper Koenen and freshman Doug Francken picked up a 6-2 No. 3 doubles victory. Junior Brett Forman and sophomore Billy Shisler ended up dropping a tough 6-3 match at No. 2 doubles.
Junior Alexander Kim got the singles action off to a good start with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against David Samardzija at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Ivan Rakic battled but dropped 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Shisler bounced back with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to tie the match back up 2-2.
Dube added another victory at No. 3 singles in a three-set match dropping the first one 3-6, but bouncing back 6-4, 6-0. The Spartans could not gather enough points as Koenen and Forman fell at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively.
Michigan State will have two more matches left of the regular season before turning its attention to the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans will take on Iowa on Sunday, April 23 at noon and then pick up and travel to Chicago, Ill. for a 7 p.m. match against UIC.
