EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Track & Field team rounded out its lone home meet of the year, the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational with multiple first-place finishes and top-times on Saturday, April 1.
"It was outstanding, we had really good energy there were a lot of people around," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Walt Drenth. "I think the timing of it was good because we had a couple of really well run events, the 800's and the 1500 meters and we had a lot of people there when those were being contested so it was kind of cool and those races were NCAA qualifying marks and it was a fun environment."
Redshirt freshman Mackenzie Weiler started off the distance races in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a first-place finish on a time of 11:08.36. In the 1,500-meter run on the women's side the Michigan State squad took the top-10 places. Sophomore Dillon McClintock led a Michigan State pack in the 800-meter run finishing first with a personal-best time of 2:07.12. The Spartans rounded out the next four places as well.
In the intermediate hurdles, sophomore Asya Reynolds took first on a time of 14.27, while sophomore Maya Roberts and redshirt freshman Andrea Pangori finished second and third, respectively. Sophomore Taylor Mullins picked up a first-place finish in the 200-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Taylor Hopp grabbed another first for MSU in the 100-meter dash crossing the finish line at 12.13. Michigan State didn't stop there taking first, second and third in the 200-meter dash.
In the field events, junior Morgan Johnson and sophomore Autumn Robinson went first and second in the long jump. Jade Madison won the javelin throw with a final throw of 38.99-meters. Junior Katelyn Daniels rounded out the competition for the women with two first-place finishes in the shot put and discus.
On the men's side redshirt senior Sherod Hardt recorded a qualifying time in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:45.15. Redshirt senior Nick Soter and redshirt junior Andrew Middleton took third and fourth, respectively.
In the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Will Agodu took first with a time of 14.39. Freshman Sam Binkowski freshman Nick Moore took third and fourth. In the 400-meter hurdles senior David Washington led the way with a first-place finish as the Spartans swept the top-three.
Freshman Savalas Morgan took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.13. He also took second in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 22.37.
In the field events, MSU took first, second and third in the long jump led by redshirt Justin Pederson who jumped 6.96-meters. Sophomore Cody Stemple tabbed first in the high jump clearing 2.06-meters.
Junior Max Knoblock concluded the action for the Spartans with a first-place finish in the javelin for a farthest throw of 56.27-meters.
Michigan State will resume competition with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Lexington, Kentucky. The meet will stretch from Friday, April 14 to Saturday, April 15.
