RALEIGH, N.C. - The Michigan State track & field team concluded its first outdoor meet of the 2017 season at the annual Raleigh Relays at the Paul H. Derr Track in Raleigh, N.C.
"In some parts I thought we were as good as day one," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Walt Drenth. "We had some competitive races and picked up some first-places. We had good anchors in a few events and we had personal bests from athletes in a few individual races. Overall I thought the things we did today, we did pretty well."
The team of freshman Annie Fuller, junior Kennedy Beazley, sophomore Erin McDonald and anchoring the relay team freshman Dillon McClintock took first and broke the MSU school record in the 4x1500-meter relay with a time of 18:28.87.
In the sprinting events, sophomore Taylor Mullins tabbed seventh-place in the 400-meter hurdles on a personal-best time of 1:01.56. The Spartans 4x800-meter relay team also raced to a first-place finish on a time of 8:50.13.
On the field events side for the women, senior Margaret Goettsch tabbed 15th, while sophomore Stephanie Pajot picked up 20th-place in the women's hammer throw.
For the men, the team of sophomore Daniel Sims, sophomore Tommy Osika, sophomore Justine Kiprotich and junior Andrew Middelton picked up a third place finish in the 4x1500-meter relay with a time of 15:58.49.
Junior Alec Wiater ran a personal-best time of 53.37 in the 400-meter hurdles for a ninth-place finish. The Spartans also had a team in the 4x800 relay team and raced to a 10th-place finish and time of 7:49.47.
For the field events, the Spartans only had one competitor and sophomore Max Knoblock took 13th in the men's javelin with a furthest throw of 56.41-meters (185-1).
"I saw some good signs," said Drenth. "We have to be better in some places, our field events were a touch off and not exactly where we need to be but we took some young kids and they just need to learn to be a little more locked in."
Michigan State will return home to host the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational this upcoming weekend. The match will be March 31-April 1 beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 31 and 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 1.
