EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon over Toledo and Bowling Green. The Spartans didn't concede a point all day, defeating Toledo 7-0 before downing BGSU 5-0 in the afternoon match. MSU improves to 6-0 this season and is looking to match the best start since the 2012-13 team began the year 7-0.
"Every time we step foot on the court we are seeing improvements from every player," said head coach Kim Bruno. "We switched up some doubles teams today and added some adversity, and the girls rose up to the challenge. They keep impressing me in what they do and they keep sticking to our values and the process. This is a great opportunity for us going into tomorrow. The girls should feel good and hopefully we recover physically and are ready to go. I want us to continue to be relentless in what we do and if we can do that I think we can be a great team."
Senior Erin Faulkner and junior Aslina Chua won 6-3 at the first doubles court to start the day, while Athena Trouillot and Davina Nguyen won their match 6-1 to give MSU the doubles point.
Chua then won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and is now 14-2 on the year and has won seven straight matches. Sophomore Emily Metcalf won her first singles match of the year at second singles and improves to 5-0 this spring, while Nguyen, Baylis, Trouillot and Memije all notched wins in singles play.
In the afternoon session, the Spartans once again took care of business in doubles play, with Faulkner and Metcalf pairing up for 6-4 win. Faulkner, Metcalf and Baylis all made quick work in singles, winning in straight sets, to give the Spartans the victory.
MSU returns to action tomorrow at home when it hosts No. 14 Auburn at 12 p.m. ET at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
