UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Michigan State gymnastics team was defeated by Penn State, 195.925-194.775, on Saturday night in University Park, Pa. It was the Spartans highest score of the season and senior Nicola Deans registered a career-high score of 39.375 to finish second in the all-around competition, while tying her career on on vault and picking up a season-high score on beam.
"We are so pleased with how Nicola is managing her competitions this year," said head coach Kathie Klages. "Each week, she gains more confidence and shines on the competition floor. The team started off with a rough rotation on bars and fought back for a high score for the season, so that was good to see and we are proud of the fight in this team."
The Spartans picked up wins in each of the first two rotations, with Nicola Deans matching her career-high 9.900 on the vault. Hailee Westney took the event title on bars for the fourth time this season with a 9.875. Elena Lagoski had her best outing of the season on the vault with a 9.775, while Drew Hendershot recorded a score of 9.750. Lindsey Lemke finished fourth on the bars with a score of 9.825.
Deans continued to lead the Spartans throughout the rest of the night on her way to a career-high score of 39.375 in the all-around competition to finish second. After winning the first event of the competition, Deans went on to finish second on the beam with a 9.850, fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.850 and eighth on the bars with a 9.775.
MSU's best event of the evening came on the floor exercise where the Spartans registered a season-high score of 49.075, led by Elena Lagoski, who won the event with a season-high score of 9.900. Kira Frederick and Deans each scored 9.850 on the event.
