With the 17-9 win over Indiana, Michigan State improved to 4-0 in Big Ten play . . . it marks the fifth time MSU has started 4-0 in Big Ten play under Mark Dantonio (2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017).
The Spartans improved to 6-1 overall on the season to become bowl eligible for the 10th time in Dantonio's 11 seasons at MSU.
The Spartans lead the all-time series against the Hoosiers, 46-16-2, including a 25-6-1 record in games played in East Lansing . . . Mark Dantonio is 8-1 against Indiana, including a 5-0 mark at Spartan Stadium.
Since 1950, the winner of the Michigan State-Indiana game has been presented the Old Brass Spittoon. The brass spittoon came from one of Michigan's earliest trading posts and is widely believed to be nearly 190 years old. Legend has it that the spittoon was around when both institutions were founded -- Indiana in 1820 and MAC in 1855. Since 1950, Michigan State leads the series 46-13-1.
Michigan State is 67-32-3 in 102 Homecoming games, including a 9-2 record under Mark Dantonio. MSU is 12-1-1 against Indiana on Homecoming.
OFFENSE
True freshman Cody White recorded career highs in catches (6) and receiving yards (99) . . . he finished with 106 all-purpose yards, as he also had one carry for 3 yards and three punt returns for 4 yards . . . White accounted for five Michigan State first downs (four receiving, one rushing), including two first-down catches in the fourth quarter . . . with MSU trailing 9-3 late in the fourth quarter and facing a third-and-19 from the IU 49, White caught a 16-yard pass to set up a manageable fourth-and-3, which MSU converted en route to scoring its first touchdown of the game to take a 10-9 lead with 5:59 remaining . . . White's season-long 34-yard reception on third-and-9 from the MSU 48 set up LJ Scott's 18-yard TD run that put MSU up 17-9 with 1:49 left.
LJ Scott led the Spartans on the ground with 22 carries for 87 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining in the game . . . Scott now has 2,188 career rushing yards, which is 17th most in MSU history . . . it also marked Scott's 21st career rushing TD, which is tied for 15th in the MSU record book.
Hunter Rison had two catches, but both were for first downs in the fourth quarter . . . on fourth-and-3 from the IU 33 on MSU's first TD drive, Rison had a 4-yard reception to keep the drive alive . . . on MSU's second TD drive of the fourth quarter, he had a 9-yard catch on third-and-8.
Brian Lewerke finished the game 16-of-29 passing for 185 yards and one touchdown, a 10-yard strike to Felton Davis III in the fourth quarter that put MSU on top, 10-9 . . . on the last two drives of the game, both for touchdowns, Lewerke was 5-of-7 passing for 73 yards, connecting on his last five throws in a row.
DEFENSE
Michigan State held Indiana to 253 yards of total offense, the lowest output of the season for the Hoosiers . . . IU also had just 95 yards rushing . . . it marked the fourth opponent MSU has held to under 100 yards rushing this season . . . MSU is 59-8 when holding opponents to under 100 yards rushing in the Dantonio era.
The Spartans didn't allow an offensive touchdown for the third time this season (Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Indiana).
Indiana was just 4-of-17 on third-down conversions and was 0-for-1 on fourth down.
Joe Bachie recorded a career-high 13 tackles and also recorded a forced fumble.
Andrew Dowell and Justin Layne also collected career highs in tackles with 10 stops apiece.
Raequan Williams tallied a career-best six tackles, including a half tackle for loss.
Freshman Jacub Panasiuk recorded his first career sack (4 yards).
SPECIAL TEAMS
Jake Hartbarger averaged 46.2 yards per punt (eight punts for 370 yards), including a career-long 62-yarder in the first quarter that was downed at the 1-yard line . . . three of his eight punts were inside the 20.
Matt Coghlin connected on a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter . . . he is now 6-of-8 on field goals for the season.
