
Spartans Drop Contest to Duke in First Weekend Road Match

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Duke in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Facility on Friday, Jan. 27. MSU dropped to 2-2 on the season, while Duke improved to 2-1 on the year.
"It was a tough match tonight," said head coach Gene Orlando. "The team gave it their best effort. Duke made us earn every point and they were able to raise their leve which created the separation for the win. It was a big win for Brett Forman, it was a very quality at the No. 1 singles."
Junior Brett Forman and sophomore Alexander Kim fell to Robert Levine and Jason Lapidus 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles, while sophomore Colin Harvey and junior Michael Dube fell 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles to Vincent Lin and Catalin Mateas. Sophomore Billy Shisler and freshman Doug Francken battled in the No. 2 doubles but ultimately fell 6-5 (8-6) to Nick Stachowiak and Spencer Furman.
Forman picked up the lone point for the Spartans in the No. 1 singles in the final set of the night when he defeated Catalin Mateas 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
Dube dropped his No. 2 singles contest to Vincent Lin 6-2, 6-2 and then junior Jasper Koenen fell 6-2 6-0 in the No. 3 singles. Sophomore Alexander Kim dropped his No. 4 singles contest to Nick Stachowiak 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Ivan Rakic dropped his only competition of the night 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 singles and Shisler fell 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles.
"Our match toughness was much improved from last week and despite the loss we are improving," said Orlando. "Clemson is next and we are working on getting the split this weekend."
Michigan State will round out its weekend road trip at Clemson on Sunday, Jan. 27. The Spartans will face the Tigers at 10 a.m. ET.
