
Spartans Fall at Home in Dual Meet to Ohio State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimming & diving men and women's teams fell to Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 20. The women fell by a score of 137-104, while the men dropped its contest 179.5-62.5 to the Buckeyes.
"Home is always a plus," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We know our pool really well, we know the walls really well and I really commend Ohio State for coming. I really appreciate them coming up and swimming with us tonight. We had some pretty good swims across the board, I was pretty pleased. The biggest thing is we improved off of last week at Purdue so that's always a plus when we can get better week to week."
The women opened up the meet with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley with the team of sophomore Cathryn Armstrong, junior Racheal Bukowski and seniors Sarah Love and Kennedy Cutler and they finished with a time of 1:43.19. Sophomore Emily Brunett followed up in the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle, with a third place finish.
Sophomore Courtney Aycock raced to a second place finish, in the 200-yard freestyle defeating the third place finisher by a tenth of a second, touching the pad at 1:53.78. Junior Haley Kornburger took fourth in the event with a time of 1:54.75.
Bukowski picked up a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 23.46. Junior Macy Moore also raced in the event and took fourth with a time of 24.60.
Cutler kept it rolling for the Spartans, swimming to a first place finish in the 200-yard IM. Cutler posted a time of 2:07.58. Sophomore Ana Sortland picked up points for MSU with a fourth place finish in the event for a time of 2:15.38.
Freshman Iana Wolff raced to a third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly on a time of 57.99, while Aycock finished fourth for a time of 58.34. Bukowski paced the way for MSU in the 100-yard freestyle racing to a second place finish on a time of 51.59. Junior Anna Stephens and Brunett finished third and fourth, respectively.
Armstrong nabbed a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.82. Junior Madison Nowak also competed in the 100-yard backstroke placing fourth with a time of 57.21.
MSU took second, third, and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, paced by Sortland who took second with a time of 1:05.8. The women concluded the swimming with a first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 56.15.
The women nabbed a first place finish in the one meter diving and a second place in the three meter diving. Senior Madeline Sewell won the one meter dive with a score of 299.55, and sophomore Heidi Surdyk took second with a score of 260.10.
The men started the day off with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley. The team of juniors Alex Trompke, Nick Leshok, senior Alec Kandt and freshman Michael Schwers concluded with a time of 1:29.74. In the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle, senior Jon Burke garnered a third place finish, junior Joe Szczupakiewicz took fourth, while senior Adam Henley finished sixth.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Trompke tied for third with Michael Salazar of Ohio State, both racing to a finishing time of 1:41.58. In the eighth event of the night, the 50-yard freestyle, freshman Payton Woods raced to a tied first place finish, touching the pad at 20.81.
Freshman Scott Piper raced to a second place finish for Michigan State in the 200-yard IM, picking up four points, and concluding with a time of 1:52.20. Freshman Phillip Meffert and junior Alex Duffy finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 200-yard IM.
Schwers and Leshok raced to third and fourth place finishes on times of 49.46 and 50.01, respectively in the 100-yard butterfly.
Junior Lachie McLeish garnered four points for the Spartans with his second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. He crossed the finish line at 50.40, defeating Ohio State's third place finisher by two-tenths of a second.
"We only have tomorrow left, then we have a senior meet against Michigan, then we are off to the Big Ten so there aren't many dress rehearsals left," said Gianiodis. "The hope is that we build off this and we get up tomorrow and we are all business and we will see what we can do down there."
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow, Jan. 21, to compete against Oakland. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
