
Spartans Battle Through Rain at Outdoor Home Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Iowa and Notre Dame at the Charles McCaffree Outdoor Pool, Friday, Sept. 30. The Spartans dropped boh duels in the men and women's competition.
The men's team started the day strong with a third place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of senior Sam Hiller, senior Alec Kandt, junior Alex Trompke, and junior Nick Leshok compiled a time of 4:01.03. In the second event of the day, women's swimmer junior Haley Kornburger nabbed a fourth place finish in the 800 meter freestyle, for a finishing time of 9:33.43. Senior Jon Burke also posted a top time in the freestyle with a second place finish and time of 8:48.67, edging out a pair of Iowa swimmers.
Freshman Scott Piper had the lone first place finish for the day for the Spartans in the 200 individual medley. Piper rolled over his competitors, and finished with a time of 2:12.98, approximately two seconds faster than the second place finisher.
The three teams took an intermission, then returned with the 200 butterfly. Iowa took first in both the men's and women's events but junior Haley Kornburger and Piper were MSU's top two finishers for both the Spartans.
Junior Sam Hiller posted a time of 2:11.78 in the 200 backstroke for a fourth place finish. On the women's side in the 200 backstroke, junior Madison Nowak grabbed a fifth place finish with a time of 2:28.85.
Notre Dame swept the top three places in the women's 400 freestyle, but Kornburger and Aycock took the fourth and fifth place slots. They finished side-by-side, Kornburger finished with a time of 4:40.06 and Aycock, 4:40.10.
MSU's men's took a third and fourth place finish in the 400 meter freestyle. Junior Joesph Szczupakiewicz took third on a time of 4:17.05, and senior Jon Burked was fourth for a time of 4:18.93.
In the second to last event the rain started to come down hard but, senior Alec Kandt marked a second place finish in the men's 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:29.37.
The Spartans fell to both the Fighting Irish and the Hawkeyes in Friday's meet. Notre Dame swept the competition defeating both Michigan State and Iowa.
At the conclusion of Friday's meet, the Michigan State swimming and diving team will have one more home meet, oct. 15, when the program will host and celebrate alumni. The team will then compete on the road until mid-January.
