EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf coach Casey Lubahn has announced the team's 2016-17 schedule.
The Spartans will play in nine regular-season tournament that they played in last season, which was a stellar season that saw MSU capture the Big Ten Match Play Championship along with winning the Inverness Intercollegiate and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The Spartans advanced to NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2009.
"I think that the 2016-17 schedule is going to be one of the most competitive in our program's history. It is a great blend of events regionally. From a competitive standpoint, we are going to be playing some of the best golf courses in America against some of the best teams in America; that is all you can ask for coming to Michigan State," Lubahn said.
The Spartans begin the season Sept. 10-11 by returning to the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. The following week MSU will again head to the Iverness Club in Toledo, Ohio for the Iverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20).
To close out September, MSU will play in the Bearcat Invitational for the first time at the Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio from the Sept. 26-27.
In October, MSU travel to the Golden State for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, California Oct. 10-11. The Spartans close out the fall season Oct. 24-25 as MSU returns to play the Quail Valley Intercollegiate (Quail Valley Golf Club) in Vero Beach, Florida.
"We have an exciting trip to California to play the Alister MacKenzie Invitational which has a long history and reputation. Combined with our usual finish at Quail Valley, the fall is going to be extremely exciting, and a great test for our guys," Lubahn said.
The spring season kicks off with the annual Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida (Feb. 10-11). The Spartans are defending champions after taking the title in 2016.
MSU will host back-to-back tournaments in February and March, beginning with The Challenge at Champions Dual in Houston, Texas on Feb. 25. The Spartans will then head to Bluffton, South Carolina for the fifth-annual Colleton River Collegiate (March 6-7). On March 12, MSU travels to Okatie, South Carolina for the CCC Dual vs. Iowa at the Chechessee Creek Club.
Spring action continues with the Clemson Challenge at the Cliffs (April 7-9) in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. This is the second-straight season that the Spartans will have played at the Cliffs. MSU will end the regular season with the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana, from April 15-16 and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 22-23) in Columbus, Ohio,
The 2017 Big Ten Championship will be held at the Baltimore Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland from April 28-30.
"It is great to start the spring in a place where we have had so much success (Palm Coast, Florida) at Big Ten Match play as hosts this year. We are looking forward to getting back there and defending our title and that leads us into a good Spring as far as spacing of the schedule and great competition across the country. It is good to get away from campus and work on our game leading up to the Big Ten Championship at a great venue the Baltimore Country Club," Lubahn said. "We are looking forward to putting ourselves in a situation to win a Big Ten Championship."
