Nine Spartans Earn CSCAA All-America Honors

EAST LANSING, Michigan - Nine Spartans were named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America's (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team, as announced by the association this week. All nine members representing Michigan State swimming and diving earned honorable mention accolades.
Six of the nine MSU honorees came from the men's team, which finished inside the nation's top 10 for team grade point average, posting a combined 3.40 this spring. Those honored are as follows:
Men
Tal Hanani - So. - IM - Mechanical Engineering
Brennan LaBar - Jr. - Diving - Packaging
Nick Leshok - So. - IM/Free - Materials Science and Engineering
Charles Maurer - Sr. - Diving - Media and Information
Mitch Strahlman - So. - Breast/Free - Supply Chain Management
Joe Szczupakiewicz - So. - Free - Applied Engineering Sciences
Women
Elizabeth Brown - Sr. - Fly/IM - Child Development
Racheal Bukowski - So. - Free - Hospitality Business
Heidi Surdyk - Fr. - Diving - Business
Selections recognize students that achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
In addition to the 853 first-team selections, 894 students were named as honorable mention selections. These students have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.
The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) designated 658 swimming and diving teams, as Scholar All-America teams for the spring semester. Michigan State's men's program tied the 10th-highest GPA in the nation, while the women's team tied for 54th.
The Spartan women posted a mark of 3.44, while the men's team combined for a GPA of 3.40. MSU's GPA improved as a team over the second semester, as they were honored in the fall for having a 3.38 on the women's side and 3.28 on the men's after the fall class load.
