EAST LANSING, Michigan - The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has designated 658 swimming and diving teams, as Scholar All-America teams for the spring semester. Michigan State's men's program tied the 10th-highest GPA in the nation, while the women's team tied for 54th.
The Spartan women posted a mark of 3.44, while the men's team combined for a GPA of 3.40. MSU's GPA improved as a team over the second semester, as they were honored in the fall for having a 3.38 on the women's side and 3.28 on the men's after the fall class load.
The Green and White had the second-highest GPA for all men's programs in the Big Ten, trailing only Indiana, who finished with a 3.41. The women tied for fourth, as Indiana, Nebraska and Rutgers had higher marks.
To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester. It is only the second time in the program's 30+ year history that more than 600 teams achieved the accolade.
A recent survey of Division I programs showed that nearly 40% of all female and over one-third of male swimmers and divers pursued degrees in the STEM fields.
Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) â€" the oldest organization of college coaches in America -is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming & diving at the collegiate level.
