Wiermsa Earns Big Ten Weekly Honor

EAST LANSING, Michigan - Michigan State track & field's junior Alexis Wiersma has been named the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week, announced the league office on Wednesday, April 27. Wiersma ran a personal best 15:53.58 in the 5,000 meters last week at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Wiersma's career-best effort garnered fourth place in the 5K race. She was the second collegiate runner to cross the line, with Leah O'Connor of adidas and Nichole Bush of New Balance taking first and third, respectively.
The 15:53.58 was more than six seconds faster than her previous best, which came at the 2016 Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 27. This was the second time the Allendale, Michigan, native broke the 16-minute barrier.
The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns the first outdoor track weekly award of her career. This is the second Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor for MSU this season, as senior Rachele Schulist earned the honor on March 30. Sophomore Katelyn Daniels was the conference's Field Athlete of the Week on April 6.
