EAST LANSING, Michigan - Michigan State women's tennis earned the No. 10 seed of the 2016 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament from April 28- May 1, hosted at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Spartans will face off against No. 7 Indiana on Thursday, April 28, at 2 p.m.
The Big Ten Conference announced the seedings and bracket for the 2016 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament on Sunday. With its win over Purdue in the regular season finale, Ohio State claimed the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and the outright conference in program history. The Buckeyes finished the regular season with an 11-0 record in conference play, including a 25-2 mark overall.
Northwestern and Michigan finished tied for second with 10-1 marks in conference play, however the Wildcats earned the No. 2 seed due to their victory over the Wolverines earlier this weekend. Michigan will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed, while Illinois secured the No. 4 seed with a mark of 8-3 in Big Ten contests. Maryland, which posted a 6-5 record in conference play, claimed the No. 5 seed.
Purdue is the No. 6 seed after finishing the season with a 5-6 mark in conference play. The Boilermakers earned the tiebreaker over No. 7 seed Indiana, No. 8 seed Minnesota and No. 9 seed Wisconsin, all of which finished with matching 5-6 records in Big Ten matches. The top six seeds in the tournament receive first-round byes and begin play in Friday's quarterfinals.
Minnesota will take on Wisconsin in the first round beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, and will be followed by Indiana vs. 10th-seeded Michigan State. The Spartans earned the No. 10 seed based on the tiebreakers with Nebraska and Penn State, which finished with matching 4-7 records in Big Ten play.
On Friday, Illinois will take on Maryland, while Michigan will face Purdue. Ohio State will take on the Minnesota-Wisconsin winner, while Northwestern will face the winner of the Indiana-Michigan State match.
Friday's quarterfinal matches and Saturday's semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. First serve for Sunday's championship match is set for Noon.
