MEET NOTES
The Spartans (7-9, 1-4 B1G) will compete in the Big Five meet against Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska and Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will air live on the BTN+.
Last Friday, MSU placed third (194.875) in a quad meet at No. 12 Cal with Southern Utah and Lindenwood. It closed the weekend at No. 11 Boise State on Sunday, falling to the Broncos 196.575-194.575.
TEAM NOTES
Michigan State's team floor RQS, a 49.130, ranks 21st in the nation, fourth in the region and fifth in the Conference.
The RQS, or regional qualifying score, is determined by the six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three are road scores. Among those six scores, the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
Floor exercise has been MSU's top event score in each of the last nine meets. The Spartans posted a season high floor team score of 49.325 on Feb. 19, which tied for 12th in program history. Those efforts tied MSU's score at Eastern Michigan with Southeast Missouri State and Ohio State on March 13, 2004.
Senior Lisa Burt's efforts at Cal last Friday earned her top-eight finishes in each of the four events: a season-high 9.875 on floor (fourth), a 9.800 on vault (tied for fifth) and bars (tied for eighth), and a 9.775 (tied for seventh) on beam. Her 39.250 all-around score placed second, matching her season best. At Boise State, Burt shared second on bars (9.875) with teammate Hailee Westney. She also shared two third-place titles, one on vault (9.800) and one on floor (9.850). Burt now has 24 top-three finishes this season and 83 in her career, which is the most of the current Spartans.
Burt maintains the team's highest RQS in three events: a 39.190 in all-around (tied for fifth in the region, 9th B1G), a 9.865 on bars to tie for ninth in the region and sixth in B1G, and a 9.805 on beam to rank in a tie for 25th in the region and 20th in the Big Ten. Her floor RQS, a 9.835, ranks tied for 20th in the Conference.
Posting a career-best 9.925 on bars on Feb. 28 at Illinois State, Burt tied for the fifth-best score in school history on the apparatus.
Junior Elena Lagoski is currently ranked seventh in the region and tied for sixth in the Conference on floor exercise with a team-high 9.885 RQS in the event.
Matching her career-high 9.950 on floor at Cal, Lagoski captured the event title with the fifth-best floor score in program history. This was the fourth time she has tied her career best, claiming four of the top 14 floor scores in the Spartan record book.
On Sunday, Lagoski posted a 9.875 on floor to share the crown at Boise State. She now has 15 top-three finishes this season, the second most on the team behind Burt (23). Eight of her top-three finishes are on floor.
Senior Brittany Holmes claimed third place all-around at Cal with a 38.650 and second at Boise State with a career-best 38.850. She now has six career top-three finishes, three of which are in all-around.
Sophomore Hailee Westney achieved a career-high 9.875 on bars last Sunday at Boise State to tie for second with teammate Burt. She also impressed with a season-high 9.750 on beam, where she has improved her score in each of the last four meets.
Notching a 9.800 on bars at Cal and a 9.850 at Boise State, freshman Jessica Ling improved her RQS to a 9.815. Her score ranks tied for 25th in the region as well as the Conference. Her bars RQS is the second highest of the Green and White behind Burt's 9.865.
Freshman Drew Hendershot garnered a 9.850 on floor to tie for third at Boise State, earning her fifth top-three finish of the season. Her five top-three finishes are the most of any freshman in the Green and White this year. Hendershot's floor RQS, a 9.835, ranks 20th in the B1G.
With a 9.845 floor RQS, junior Kira Frederick ranks tied for 23rd in the region and 15th in the Conference for the event. Her score is the second highest of the Spartans, behind Lagoski's 9.885.
Frederick has improved her floor score in each of her last four meets, but has not competed the last three weekends. Eleven of her 12 career top-three finishes are on floor.
Graduate student Haley Sedgewick matched her MSU-best 9.800 on vault last Sunday at Boise State to tie for second overall, marking her second top-three finish of 2016.
With a vault RQS of 9.770, senior Nicola Deans holds the highest score of the team, ahead of Burt's 9.760.
Redshirt senior Ashley Noll garnered a 9.675 on beam at Cal and a 9.525 at Boise State to improve her RQS to a 9.720. Her score is the second highest of the Green and White behind Burt's 9.805.
Freshman Roya Shirley made her debut on bars at Cal, notching a 9.625. She also earned a 9.675 on vault, which she improved two days later at Boise State (9.700).
MSU will travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, March 19, to compete in the Big Ten Championships. The meet will be televised live on BTN.
