Javier Gasca Places Sixth at Big Ten Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Michigan State redshirt sophomore Javier Gasca finished in sixth place at 141 pounds at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Gasca, who secured his trip to the NCAA Championships with two victories in session one on Saturday, fell to second-seeded Tommy Thorn of Minnesota, 11-6, in the consolation semifinals in his first match on Sunday.
In the sixth-place match, Gasca dropped a 3-2 decision to Danny Sabatello of Purdue.
The top-seven finishers at 141 pounds are guaranteed bids to the NCAA Championships.
In session one, Gasca, a No. 5 seed, defeated Indiana's Tommy Cash by major decision, 15-4, in the first round, and beat fourth-seeded Jameson Oster of Northwestern in the quarterfinals, 7-2. Gasca fell in hard-fought match in the semifinals, 6-5, to Penn State's Jimmy Gulibon.
The 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships are set for March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
