MEET NOTES
The Spartans (6-6, 1-5 B1G) will compete against No. 12 Cal, Southern Utah and Lindenwood on Friday in Berkley, Calif. They will close out the weekend in Boise, Idaho, taking on No. 11 Boise State on Sunday.
Last Sunday, MSU won a quad meet at Illinois State with UW-Stout and Western Michigan, earning a team score of 195.100.
The California Golden Bears are currently 9-4 and ranked No. 12 in the nation. They are coming off of a loss to PAC-12 conference foe No. 5 Utah last Saturday. Southern Utah (7-4) was edged by BYU last weekend, 196.000-195.750, and Lindenwood (7-10) fell to Illinois, 193.550-195.875.
The undefeated Boise State Broncos are currently No. 11 in the nation. They notched their ninth victory of the season last Friday against Utah State.
TEAM NOTES
Michigan State's team floor RQS, a 49.105, ranks 17th in the nation, fourth in the region and fourth in the Conference.
Floor exercise has been MSU's top event score in each of the last seven meets. The Spartans posted a season-high floor team score of 49.325 against Illinois on Feb. 19, which tied for 12th in the Spartan record book. Those efforts tied MSU's score at Eastern Michigan with Southeast Missouri State and Ohio State on March 13, 2004.
Senior Lisa Burt's efforts last week earned her an individual event crown in all-around, bars and floor, posting a 38.525, a 9.925 and a 9.850, respectively. Her bars score matched a career best, while her floor score tied her season high. She also placed third on beam with a 9.750. Burt now has 21 top-three finishes this season and 80 in her career, which is the highest on the team.
Burt maintains the team's highest RQS for all-around, bars and beam: a 39.045 in all-around (tied for fifth in the region, 12th B1G), a 9.855 on bars to tie for ninth in the region and fifth in B1G, and a 9.800 on beam to rank in a tie for 24th in the region and 21st in the Big Ten.
Competing all-around for the first time in her career, senior Brittany Holmes notched a third place finish with a 38.775 last week at Illinois State. This was her second top-three finish of the season. She also collected a 9.800 on floor, just missing her career -high 9.825 set vs. Illinois on Feb. 19.
Junior Elena Lagoski is currently ranked tied for 11th in the region and eighth in the Conference on floor exercise, with a team-high 9.855 RQS in the event. She also owns a 9.755 RQS on vault, the second highest on the team behind senior Nicola Deans' 9.770.
After notching a 9.825 on bars and a 9.800 on floor to tie for third in both events at Illinois State, Lagoski now has 13 top-three finishes this season, the second highest on the team behind Burt (21). Six of her top finishes are on floor.
Marking her second event title of the year, freshman Jessica Ling impressed with a 9.850 on bars last Sunday, just missing her career high set vs. Illinois on Feb. 19. With this finish, Ling's RQS improved to a 9.790, which is second on the team behind Burt's 9.855.
Freshman Drew Hendershot garnered a 9.825 on floor to tie for second at Illinois State, earning her fourth top-three finish of the season. Her four top finishes are the most of any freshman on the team. Hendershot's RQS score now ranks 24th in the B1G.
With a 9.845 floor RQS, junior Kira Frederick ranks 18th in the region and tied for 11th in the Conference for the event. Her score is the second highest on the team, behind Lagoski's 9.855.
Frederick has improved her floor score in each of her last four meets. Eleven of her 12 career top-three finishes are on floor.
Sophomore Victoria Huehn won her first career individual event title at Illinois State, producing a season-high 9.800 on beam, just missing her career-high 9.825.
Graduate student Haley Sedgewick collected a career-high 9.800 on vault last Sunday to place second overall, marking her first top-three finish of 2016.
With a RQS of 9.770, senior Nicola Deans holds the highest vault score of the team, ahead of Lagoski's 9.755.
Matching her season high 9.800 on floor last weekend, redshirt senior Ashley Noll tied for third to claim her first top-three finish of the season. With this finish, her RQS score improved to a 9.680, which ties with Holmes for second highest on the team.
Sophomore Hailee Westney achieved a season- high 9.650 on beam in the quad meet last Sunday to place fifth overall.
Junior Holly Ryan has improved her beam scores in each of her last four meets.
Next week, MSU will travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, March 12, to compete in the Big Five Meet against Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska and Ohio State at 4 p.m. It will be televised on BTN.
